Grizzlies Shut out for Second Straight Game
July 4, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, Calif. - For the second straight night, the Fresno Grizzlies were shut out as they fell 1-0 to the Sacramento River Cats on the Fourth of July at Chukchansi Park. The Grizzlies have not scored a run in their last 23 innings.
Grizzlies starting pitcher Mitch Lively allowed a two-out RBI double to Michael Choice in the first inning for the game's only run. Lively scattered five hits over his final five innings as he suffered his second straight loss. Lively lowered his ERA as a starter, however, to 3.68.
Sacramento starting pitcher Sonny Gray struck out nine and walked two over his seven shutout innings. Hideiki Okajima and Brian Gordon each contributed a scoreless inning of relief to complete the shutout.
The Fresno offense went hitless in seven runners in scoring position opportunities for the second straight tonight as well. The Grizzlies had a bases loaded opportunity in the fourth inning before Kensuke Tanaka lined out to end the inning.
Brett Pill led off the ninth inning with a double that required an elusive slide to reach second base safely. The Grizzlies stranded Pill, however, closing out the game with three straight outs.
Roger Kieschnick went 2-for-3 with a walk. He was the lone Grizzlies hitter with more than one hit.
The Grizzlies finished with six hits, three of which were doubles. Fresno has 180 doubles this season.
The Fresno bullpen did their part to hold the River Cats offense at bay. Brett Bochy threw two perfect innings while Heath Hembree covered a single in the ninth inning by striking out the side.
The Grizzlies and River Cats will meet for game two of the four-game series on Friday at Chukchansi Park. The 7:05 pm game will feature Fresno's right-hander Chris Heston facing River Cats lefty Andrew Werner.
