Few Fireworks as Zephyrs Fall, 2-1
July 4, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Brad Peacock and three Oklahoma City relievers combined on a three-hitter as the RedHawks defeated the New Orleans Zephyrs, 2-1 on Independence Day at Zephyr Field before a crowd of 11,212, the sixth-largest in club history.
New Orleans got on the scoreboard first, courtesy of a two-out solo home run by Nick Green, his third homer of the year. After that, Peacock retired 10 consecutive batters.
Oklahoma City tied the game in the third. With two outs and runners on first and second, George Springer singled to center, and Robbie Grossman crossed the plate with the tying run moments before Jonathan Villar was thrown out attempting to go back to second base.
The RedHawks scored the eventual winning run in the fifth, when Che-Hsuan Lin singled to right field and advanced to third on a two-base error by Bryan Petersen to lead off the frame. With Cody Clark batting, Brian Flynn threw a wild pitch that scored Lin to push the RedHawks into the lead.
From that point, the Zephyrs had only two baserunners, both in the sixth inning. Zack Cox drew a leadoff walk against Peacock and one out later, Gil Velazquez dumped a single into right field. Bryan Petersen hit a slow grounder that advanced both runners into scoring position, but Peacock rebounded to strike out Joe Mahoney to end the threat.
Z's starter Brian Flynn (2-9) became the sixth Pacific Coast League pitcher to suffer a ninth loss this season. He pitched 6.2 innings, and gave up two runs on seven hits while striking out six batters. Flynn has dropped each of his last five decisions despite turning in three quality starts, and has lost each of his three assignments against Oklahoma City.
Peacock (4-2) picked up his third consecutive victory, and has now allowed just one run in 12 1/3 innings in a pair of wins against the Zephyrs.
Former Tulane star Josh Zeid retired the heart of the Zephyrs' lineup in order in the ninth inning to pick up his ninth save of the season, and third against New Orleans.
The teams meet again Friday in the second game of the series with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
