Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
Ahead 2-1 entering the fifth inning the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (45-41) allowed eight unanswered runs to fall to the Reno Aces (35-53), 9-2 in front of a sell-out crowd of 8,799 on Fourth Of July. The crowd was the third largest at Security Service Field since the renovations and ninth largest in the team's history.
The Sky Sox started off the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Charlie Culberson smacked a lead-off double and Ryan Wheeler hit a double of his own off of spot-starter Garret Mock (W, 5-4), to make it 1-0.
Reno answered an inning later with two doubles of their own to tie the game at one. Colorado Springs seized back the lead in the fourth when Xavier Nady reached on a single and advanced to second on an error and third on a wild pitch. After Ben Paulsen walked, Nady scored when Tim Wheeler grounded into a double play.
Starting left-hander Jeff Francis threw five solid innings for Colorado Springs, giving up the run in the second and one more in the fifth before leaving the game. Francis finished the game only allowing five hits while striking out four batters.
In the sixth, the Sky Sox began to falter when Nick Schmidt (L, 3-3) entered the game and put two runners on before giving up three straight singles to give Reno the 5-2 lead. From then on out the Aces would continue to build on their lead, scoring one more in the seventh on a RBI double and three in the ninth on a RBI double and two RBI triples. Reno finished the day with six doubles and three triples out of their 16 total hits.
Colorado Springs will look to snap their five-game losing streak tomorrow on another fireworks night at Security Service Field when righty Chris Volstad (5-1, 4.55), goes up against fellow righty Charles Brewer (3-7, 5.38) at 7:00 PM MT.
Sky Sox Notes: After starting off his Sky Sox career, 0-for-8 with three strikeouts, the veteran outfielder has gone 5-11 with a double and a run....Ryan Wheeler went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a walk to extend his hitting streak to 10. The third baseman has now had three hitting streaks of nine or more games this season.
