Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - Nate Tenbrink recorded three hits and Stefen Romero drove in two runs as the Tacoma Rainiers topped the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 4-2 in front of 6,697 fans at Cheney Stadium on Wednesday. The victory completed a three-game series sweep for the Rainiers over the Sky Sox.
Tacoma took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after first baseman Rich Poythress and Tenbrink recorded back-to-back singles with two outs.
After the Sky Sox evened things with a two-run frame in the fourth inning, the Rainiers retook the lead for good in the fifth. Outfielder Stefen Romero hit a go-ahead two-RBI single that cleared the way for Robert Andino and Abraham Almonte to score.
The Rainiers lineup combined to collect 11 hits in the finale with the Sky Sox. Tenbrink led the charge after going 3-for-4 with an RBI. He has now hit safely in seven of his last nine at-bats after going 4-for-5 in Tuesday's contest against Colorado Springs.
Romero, Andino and shortstop Carlos Triunfel each recorded a pair of singles. Romero has recorded hits in each of his last three games and is batting .500 (6x12) with three RBI since July 1.
Starter James Paxton (5-6) earned the win after holding the Sky Sox to two runs on five hits over five innings. The left-hander struck out six and walked four in his team-leading 17th start this season.
Relievers Lucas Luetge (3.0 IP) and Logan Bawcom (1.0 IP) combined to toss four shutout innings out of the bullpen. Bawcom produced a hitless effort in the ninth and collected his 14th save of the year.
At 51-36, Tacoma boasts the best record in the Pacific Coast League and owns a four-game lead over Salt Lake in the Pacific Northern Division.
The Rainiers begin a seven-game road trip tomorrow, July 4, when they head to Salt Lake to open a four-game series against the Bees. Right-hander Brian Sweeney (7-3, 3.93) is slated to start for Tacoma against Salt Lake's right-hander Jarrett Grube (3-2, 3.40). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
