Sacramento River Cats News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - Sonny Gray struck out nine in seven innings of work for his eighth win of the season as the River Cats took game one of their series against the Fresno Grizzlies by a score of 1-0 on Independence Day at Chukchansi Park.
The game's only run came in the top of the first when Michael Choice doubled-home Daric Barton off of Fresno starter Mitch Lively. After that, Sonny Gray took the mound and dominated, allowing only seven men to reach base-none of whom crossed the plate. The top prospect-who had his start delayed two days-struck out nine, lowering his ERA to 2.81 in the process.
Each team recorded six hits and two walks, and each starting pitcher allowed five hits and two walks. Each team's five hitter went 2-for-3 with a walk, and each team turned one double play.
Stephen Vogt went 2-for-3 with a walk in his return to the River Cats after appearing in four games with the Athletics. Choice went 1-for-4 with an RBI while Barton went 0-for-3 with a run and a walk. Hideki Okajima picked up his fourth hold with one scoreless inning of work, and Brian Gordon notched his seventh save with a scoreless inning of his own.
The loss was charged to Lively, who gave up the game's only run on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Roger Kieschnick went 2-for-3 with a walk and a double, while Fresno first baseman Brett Pill finished 1-for-4 with a two-base hit of his own.
Each of the Sacramento's last three games have been shutouts, with Sacramento going 2-1. The River Cats lost to the Tucson Padres 2-0 on Wednesday, and beat the T-Pads 2-0 on Tuesday.
The two teams return to Chukchansi Park at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday evening when River Cats southpaw Andrew Werner (7-10, 5.50 ERA) takes on Grizzlies righty Chris Heston (7-5, 5.31 ERA).
