Komets Host Walleye New Year's Eve

Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komets will host their 57th New Year's Eve game Tuesday night when the Toledo Walleye visit for a 7:30pm faceoff. The Komets started the tradition of a home New Year's Eve game in 1955 with a 3-2 win over the visiting Troy Bruins in the old International Hockey League. The only year the Komets were idle New Year's Eve was in 1975. There have been 38 consecutive Komet New Year's Eve games since 1975 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum and over 10,000 fans have celebrated New Year's Eve with the Komets the last five straight years.

The Komets are 37-14-5 on New Year's Eve after suffering a 9-4 setback last year against Toledo. The Komets have rung in the new year with a Toledo team the most. This year will be the 10th visit by a Toledo team on Dec. 31. The Komets are looking to improve their 3-6-0 record against a Toledo team on New Year's Eve.

The busy holiday schedule continues Friday when the Komets skate at Evansville at 8:15pm ET. The Komets and Evansville will return to Fort Wayne for a 7:30pm faceoff Saturday at the Memorial Coliseum. Sunday the Komets cap a holiday stretch of seven games in 10 nights when Kalamazoo makes their first visit of the season at 5pm.

Week 11 in review-- The Komets earned two points in three games for week 11 of 2013-14 and hold fourth place in the North Division trailing first-place Cincinnati by 11 points after 27 games. Friday the Komets extended their season unbeaten streak against Toledo to three games with a 4-3 home win. Saturday the Komets fell 5-2 to the IceMen in their fourth of six trips to Evansville. The setback snapped a brief two-game Fort Wayne unbeaten string. Sunday the Komets were clipped by the visiting Gwinnett Gladiators 3-2 in the first of two meetings with the Gladiators this season.

K-Notables-- Brandon Marino (RW) led the Komets for the week with 2 goals, 3 assists. Marino had points in each game played for a three-game point and assist scoring streak and leads the Komets with 21 assists and 34 points......Rookie Scott Fleming (LW) scored a goal and added three assists for a four-point week and leads ECHL rookies with 17 assists and 26 points after 27 games....Mike Embach (LW) scored three goals for the week for totals of four goals and eight points after his first seven games with Fort Wayne....Sy Nutkevitch (C) made his ECHL debut scoring assists in each of his first two Komet games Friday and Saturday.....Andrey Makarov had his three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1) stopped after suffering his first regulation loss in four outings Saturday night at Evansville.....Rookie goaltender Ben Meisner made his Fort Wayne debut Sunday stopping 22 of 25 Gwinnett shots.

This Saturday night's home game against the Evansville IceMen at 7:30pm will be broadcast on WKJG Radio AM 1380 due to a scheduling conflict.

Sound Off with the Komets Monday Nights on 21Alive-- The Komets, 21Alive and title sponsor PHP present Sound Off with the Komets, a live weekly televised sports program each Monday night during the Komet season at 7:30pm on WPTA TV 21Alive. The half-hour show is televised from Champions Bar and Restaurant in downtown Fort Wayne and features highlights, interviews and call-ins as Komet players and personnel serve as co-hosts with 21Alive's Tommy Schoegler. Tonight, Dec. 30, Komet captain Kaleigh Schrock will be Tommy's guest.

KOMETS ON ICE THIS WEEK

. Tuesday, Dec. 31, Toledo Walleye (8-15-3, 19 points) at Komets (11-11-5, 26 points) 7:30pm-- The Komets will ring in the new year with Toledo. It's the fourth of six visits by the Walleye this season and the fourth of nine meetings overall. The Komets will make their first trip of the season to Toledo Friday, Jan. 10. The Komets lead the season series 2-0-1 after collecting a 4-3 win last Friday night against the Walleye on Coliseum ice. The Walleye are riding a three-game losing streak after suffering a 7-3 home loss to Cincinnati Saturday night in their last time out. Toledo will host Kalamazoo Monday night before traveling to Fort Wayne Tuesday.

. Friday, Jan. 3, Komets at Evansville IceMen (15-7-5, 35 points), 8:15pm ET-- The Komets will take on division rival Evansville Friday in the sixth of nine meetings this season and the fifth of six visits to the Ford Center in Evansville. The Komets are 2-3-0 against the IceMen after a 5-2 setback at Evansville last Saturday night. The IceMen will host Gwinnett New Year's Eve before traveling to Fort Wayne Friday.

. Saturday, Jan. 4, Evansville IceMen at Komets, 7:30pm-- The Komets will host Evansville in the backend of a home-and-home weekend series Saturday night. It's the second of three visits by the IceMen to Fort Wayne. The Komets scored a 4-1 victory over Evansville in the IceMen's first visit of the year Dec. 15.

. Sunday, Jan. 5, Kalamazoo Wings (14-10-2, 30 points) at Komets, 5pm-- The Komets will welcome Kalamazoo for the first of six visits this season and the first of three Sunday visits. After two meetings the Komets and Wings are even 1-1-0. Sunday's match will be the 195th regular season meeting since the two teams first faced each other Nov. 15, 1974 when the Komets clipped Kalamazoo 2-1 at Wings Stadium. The first ever trip to Fort Wayne by the Kalamazoo Wings was on Christmas day, 1974, when the Komets celebrated with an 8-2 win. The division rival Wings enter the week leading the Komets by three points in the North Division. This week Kalamazoo skates at Toledo Monday and hosts Cincinnati New Year's Eve and Friday. The Wings will host Toledo Saturday night before finishing a week of five games in six nights Sunday at Fort Wayne.
