Wheeling Nailers News Release
ELMIRA, NY- With Peter Delmas on the shelf due to injury, Patrick Killeen is making the most of his opportunity to get the Wheeling Nailers as many points as possible. On Monday night, Killeen made 30 saves on 31 shots, and Peter Merth picked up his first goal in over a year. Unfortunately, those performances fell just short, as the Elmira Jackals snuck away with a 2-1 shootout victory in front of 4,193 fans at First Arena.
After a scoreless first period, the Jackals opened the scoring at the 7:22 mark of the second. Rob Bellamy took a shot from the right point that got deflected in the slot by Kevin Harvey, sending it bouncing past Patrick Killeen. Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel had the other assist on the lone marker during the first 40 minutes of play.
The Nailers evened the score 5:39 into the third period. Zack Torquato spotted Peter Merth in center ice, just after Merth had stepped out of the penalty box. The Wheeling blueliner took the pass from Torquato, and was off to the races, beating Nick Niedert with a wrist shot from the inside of the right circle.
Neither team could find the twine in the remainder of regulation or overtime, sending the contest into a shootout. Mike Radja's tally in the second round was the lone marker of the shootout, as Elmira improved to 8-0 in games decided after regulation this season.
Nick Niedert picked up his second straight win for the Jackals, making 22 saves on 23 shots. Patrick Killeen received the shootout loss for the Nailers, despite stopping 30 of the 31 shots he faced.
Wheeling's next game takes place on Wednesday night, when they visit the Trenton Titans at 7:00. The Nailers will return to WesBanco Arena on Saturday night at 7:35, when they take on the Reading Royals.
