Kalamazoo losses to Cincinnati on Teddy Bear Toss Night
December 13, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI- The Cincinnati Cyclones came into Wings Stadium on Friday night and did something that no team has been able to do since November 27th, defeat the Kalamazoo Wings in regulation. Cincinnati snapped Kalamazoo's four-game winning and six-game (5-0-0-1) unbeaten in regulation streak with a 5-2 victory during the 14th annual Teddy Bear Toss Night.
Fans didn't have to wait too long to toss the stuffed animals. Skating in from the left point, Elgin Reid (2nd) lifted a wrist shot over Rob Madore 8:23 into the first period.
The goal sent 1,170 teddy bears cascading down from the stands. The stuffed animals collected will be divided between the Salvation Army and for the K-Wings annual visit this Thursday, December 19th at 2 p.m. at the Bronson's Children's Hospital.
About two minutes later, Cincinnati quickly responded. With a ruckus in front of him, Jordan Binnington was unable to stop a Wade Megan (12th) deflection resulting in the equalizing goal.
On a two-man advantage, Kalamazoo gave up the lead 16:18 into the first period, when the Cyclones scored short-handed with a tally from Logan Shaw (5th).
Cincinnati increased their lead to two goals midway in the second period with a goal from Josh Shalla (1st). Waiting on near goal post, Shaw found Shalla for the backdoor marker 9:18 into the period.
Putting the game out of reach early in the third period was Josh Birkholz (3rd). Coming in on an odd-man rush Birkholz, who was hooked, was able to lift the puck past Binnington while falling to the ice to extend the Cyclones lead to 4-1.
Attempting a comeback midway in the period, Ludwig Blomstrand used a quick wrist shot from atop of the left circle to cut Cincinnati's lead to two goals.
Josh McFadden (2nd) tacked on an empty-netter with 2.7 seconds remaining to close out the scoring.
The K-Wings will conclude the week on Saturday, December 14th with a 7:30 p.m. face-off versus the Fort Wayne Komets on Autism Awareness Night featuring a performance from Flippenout.
