Game #46 - Home Game #29 (21-24), (16-12)

Last time out...

The Florence Freedom (21-24) fell short in game one of Wednesday's double header against the Frontier Greys (12-35) by a score of 5-3 but scored seven runs in the first inning of game two to prevail by a score of 9-3, splitting the twin bill. The Freedom left 10 men on base in game one and the Greys took the lead for good in the sixth inning, taking advantage of Sam Eberle's second error of the game. A RBI sacrifice bunt from Greg Bachman scored the go-ahead run as all Chuck Weaver could do was tag Bachman out as Cameron Monger crossed the plate. Weaver went six innings, giving up four runs on five hits in the defeat. The Freedom took advantage of four walks and a two hit by pitches in the first inning of game two. Orrin Sears delivered the big blow with a bases-clearing triple. Dave Middendorf went the distance for the Freedom to get the win as they beat the Greys for the first time this season.

For Starters...

Michael O'Neal makes his second start of the season tonight. He made his professional debut on July 4 against the Washington Wild Things and went five innings of four-hit ball to pick up the victory. He gave up only two runs while walking only one batter. O'Neal pitched two seasons at Auburn University after transferring from Chattahoochee Valley Community College. He threw 10 complete games for Chattahoochee Valley in 2011 as a freshman and posted a 3.65 ERA as a sophomore in 2012. O'Neal had an outstanding season for Auburn in 2013 as he went 8-4 with a 2.73 ERA in 14 starts with two complete games. He held opponents to a .223 batting average in 2013. His 89 innings pitched led the Tigers and was eighth in the SEC.

Rubber match...

Tonight is the rubber match of the three-game series between the Freedom and the Greys. Florence is 3-4 in rubber matches so far this season. With a win tonight the Freedom would win their third consecutive home series and seventh overall this season.

Multi Hit Games...

Sam Eberle leads the Freedom with 14 multi-hit games. He is currently working on a nine-game hitting streak as well.

First inning success...

The Freedom have out-scored opponents 37-19 in the first inning this season. It's the most runs they've scored in a particular inning this season and their largest positive run differential in an inning.

Almost even...

The Freedom have been out-scored 183-182 overall on the season.

Walk this way...

Joe Staley drew five walks in yesterday's double header. He leads the team and is fourth in the Frontier League in walks with 34.

Making the most of his hits...

Rob Kelly is five for his last 27 at the plate but three of those five hits are home runs.

New guys making good...

Zak Blair (.333, 6-18, 3-RBI) and Ryan Solberg (.313, 5-16, 3-RBI) are off to strong starts with Florence.

Hey now, you're an All-Star!

Outfielder Cole Miles, catcher Joe Staley and RHP Chuck Weaver were named Frontier League All-Stars on Monday. Miles and Staley will start for the east division in the July 16 game in Sauget, IL.

Transaction Wire...

The Freedom signed INF Chance Ross yesterday.

Tonight's Special Jerseys...

The Freedom are wearing Captain America themed jerseys for Superhero Night tonight. As a result Zak Blair is wearing #16 and Chance Ross is wearing #12.
