Normal CornBelters News Release
NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, announced that they have added two additional Belters to the All-Star Game. Infielder Santiago Chirino will be added to the roster and Field Manager Brooks Carey will be added to the coaching staff. The All-Star Game will be held on July 16 at GCS Ballpark, the home of the Gateway Grizzlies.
Chirino adds to the six Belters already named to the team to set the franchise record at seven Belters named All-Stars. The Venezuelan native is hitting .337 this season with 18 RBI, eight doubles, two triples and only 11 strikeouts in 190 at-bats.
"I want to thank Phil Warren for recognizing the season that Chirino is having," said Carey. "He saw what I see every day and that he deserves to be an All-Star."
Chirino is joining Cullen Babin, Aaron Dudley, Sam Judah, Alan Oaks, Mike Schwartz and Tyler Shover to represent the CornBelters in the All-Star Game.
The two managers in first place in each division following Wednesday's games were named the managers in the All-Star Game and they selected the final three players per division to finalize each roster on Thursday. CornBelters Field Manager Brooks Carey was asked by Phil Warren, the manager of the Gateway Grizzlies and the coach of the West Division All-Star team, to join the coaching staff for the All-Star Game.
"I thank Phil for choosing me to join his staff for the All-Star festivities in St. Louis," said Carey. "It is an honor to represent the CornBelters and I look forward to a fun week there."
"We are pleased that Brooks and Santiago have been recognized by the League for their efforts so far this year," said CornBelters President Steve Malliet. "Both are very deserving and I want to thank All-Star Manager Phil Warren and Commissioner Bill Lee for recognizing both."
Tickets for each event can be purchased online at www.gatewaygrizzlies.com or by calling the Gateway offices at (618) 337-3000.
