(Florence, KY) - The Florence Freedom (21-25) took an early lead but couldn't hold on in an 8-5 loss to the Frontier Greys (13-35) Thursday night.

The Greys exploded for six runs, including two home runs, in the sixth inning to take the lead for good in the game.

But first it was the Freedom getting on the board in the second inning. With one out, Chance Ross singled and Rob Kelly doubled him to third. Ben Kline stepped to the plate and delivered a two-RBI single to put Florence on top 2-0.

Rookie starter Michael O'Neal (1-1) escaped unscathed through the first four innings but the Greys pushed across an unearned run in the fifth. With one out Chris Ellison reached on an error by Caleb Bryson. He would go to second on the play and go to third on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly from Joe Rapp brought him home and cut Florence's lead to one.

Then the sixth inning came and disaster struck for the Freedom. Michael Vaughn and Jon Minucci smacked back-to-back singles to start the frame. That's when Frank Florio stepped to the plated and launched a three-run home run to put the Greys up 4-2. That was it for O'Neal and Pete Levitt entered the game for Florence. He immediately surrendered a long ball to Greg Bachman and it was 5-2 Greys. One out later Chase Tucker doubled and Chris Ellison singled him home. After Joe Rapp walked, another error by the Freedom led to another run for the Greys and when the dust cleared the Greys had a 7-2 lead.

The Freedom did respond with a couple of runs in the bottom of the sixth as Ryan Solberg contributed a sacrifice fly and Rob Kelly hit a RBI ground-out.

But the Greys got an insurance run in the eighth on an Ellison home run and the Freedom's one run in the bottom of the eighth on a Ross triple wasn't enough to come back as they fell to 1-5 on the year against the Greys.

The Freedom head to Washington to take on the Wild Things in a three-game series starting on Friday. Casey Henn (3-3, 3.31 ERA) takes the hill for Florence. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. eastern time and all the action can be heard on http://www.allinbroadcasting.com/Florence.html.
