Joliet Slammers News Release

The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy- lose another close one late 7-6 to Normal on Thursday night.

The Slammers got off to a great start in the first. Marquis Riley led off the game with a home run and it was followed by Chris Epps hitting a solo homer of his own making it 2-0 after two batters against Normal starter Chris Carmain. Joliet made it 3-0 in the 2nd on a RBI grounder from Danny Hernandez. The first run for Normal came in the bottom of the 2nd inning as Jhiomar Veras singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1. It became 4-1 Slammers on a solo homer from Grant DeBruin in the top of the 3rd. That moved his hitting streak to 13 straight games and he has now reached safely in 22 of his last 23 games.

Kody McFarland pitched well for Joliet. He went the 1st five innings and allowed two runs on six hits with 8 strikeouts and no walks. Kevin McNorton came on for him in the 6th. In the 7th, Riley hit a 2-run homer to give Joliet a 6-2 lead. He becomes the 1st Slammer to have a multi-homer game. He now has 15 multi-hit games on the year. Normal came right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the 7th. The first scored on a wild pitch and the next on a RBI single from Mike Schwartz. They then tied the game with two more runs in the 8th. Ozney Guillen came up with two men on base and hit a fly ball to deep leftfield. Riley got to it for Joliet but dropped it as he got to the warning track and both runs scored to tie the game at 6-6. Normal then won the game in the bottom of the 9th in weird fashion. Mike Schwartz led off with a bloop to medium left that dropped just out of reach of DeBruin and Riley. Sam Judah followed with the identical bloop hit to medium right this time that dropped just out of reach this time of Jose Garcia and Epps to score Schwartz and end the game 7-6.

Joliet now opens a four game series at Schaumburg on Friday at 6:30pm. Those two teams will then play a 5pm doubleheader on Saturday before wrapping things up on Sunday at 1pm. The All-Star Break then begins as Joliet will host the Dutch National Women's Fastpitch Softball team in an exhibition game on Monday July 14 at 7pm at Silver Cross Field.
