Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - After trailing by five after the third inning, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp completed their largest comeback of the season to beat the Norfolk Tides 9-8 in 10 innings Wednesday night at Harbor Park. The comeback is the biggest for the Jumbo Shrimp since they mounted a five-run rally against the Biloxi Shuckers on July 11, 2018, when Jacksonville was members of the Southern League.

Entering the top of the 10th, Jacksonville (27-23) managed to push a run across to take the late lead. With Erik González starting at second, Bryson Brigman singled to put runners at the corners. Brian Miller continued his great day at the plate with a sac fly, scoring González to give the Jumbo Shrimp the 9-8 lead.

The Tides (23-27) started off strong plating a run in the first. Back-to-back walks to start the inning and with one out, Tyler Nevin plated one run off a single as Norfolk jumped ahead 1-0.

The advantage continued to lean in the favor of Norfolk in the third. Dylan Harris led off with a walk and Richie Martin followed with a single. Cadyn Grenier also singled to load the bases and Kyle Stowers doubled to score Harris and Martin to put the Tides up 3-0. Nevin singled in the next at-bat, scoring Grenier to give Norfolk a 4-0 advantage while Stowers advanced to third. Two batters later, Robert Neustrom drove in Stowers on a single to push the lead to 5-0.

The Jumbo Shrimp were held scoreless until the seventh inning and that is where the momentum started to shift. With one out, JJ Bleday (9) blasted a solo home run to cut the deficit to 5-1. Lorenzo Quintana followed with a single and then advanced to second on a wild pitch during the at-bat of Charles Leblanc. Leblanc walked to put two runners on for Erik González, who singled to load the bases. Brigman was hit by a pitch, scoring Quintana to make the score 5-2. After a pitching change, Miller smacked a bases-clearing triple to tie the game at five. Peyton Burdick was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat and Demetrius Sims, who entered as a pinch hitter for Lewin Díaz, worked a walk to load the bases once again. Bleday worked a walk, scoring Miller as Jacksonville took the 6-5 lead.

The game started to seesaw as Norfolk tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Grenier walked and Stowers was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Nevin walked to load the bases. Kelvin Gutierrez hit into a doubleplay but Grenier scored from third to tie the game at six.

After a scoreless eighth, Jacksonville took another lead in the top of the ninth. Sims and Jerar Encarnacion began the inning with two singles. With one out, both runners advanced on a wild pitch while Quintana was at the plate. Following the wild pitch, Quintana blooped a single, scoring both runners to give Jacksonville an 8-6 lead.

Norfolk didn't quit as they answered with two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Grenier singled and scored on a double from Stowers to bring the Tides to within one, 8-7. Following a strikeout, a groundout by Gutierrez allowed Stowers to advance to third. Jacksonville reliever Jimmy Yacabonis (W, 4-3) hit Neustrom with a pitch putting runners at the corners before a wild pitch allowed Stowers to score from third and tie the game at eight.

Norfolk made it interesting in the bottom of the 10th. With Anthony Bemboom starting at second, Jacob Nottingham grounded out. Bemboom advanced to third but never moved from that spot. Richie Martin walked and stole second but Grenier struck out. Stowers was given a free pass to first before Nevin grounded out to end the game and Bemboom was stranded at third.

Jacksonville and Norfolk continue their series tomorrow at 12:05 p.m. ET. The Jumbo Shrimp will turn to LHP Daniel Castano (2-0, 5.63) and the Tides will counter with LHP Kevin Smith (0-3, 3.22).
