Elmira Jackals News Release


ELMIRA, NY - The Elmira Jackals, proud member of the ECHL, picked up seven of a possible eight points, going 3-0-1-0 in four games last weekend to pull within one point of first place Cincinnati in the North Division race and move 11 points up on third place Reading.

Overall: 30-10-2-2 (64 pts.) 2nd North Division/3rd American Conference/4th Overall Last Week: 3-0-1-0 (7 pts.)

Wednesday, January 30th - v. JOHSNTOWN (3-1 W) Att: 3,143 Shots: ELM 34-29 PP: 1/5 PK: 5/5

The Jackals put together a methodical effort in scoring in each period to gain their first win over Johnstown in three tries this season. Captain FRANK LITTLEJOHN sandwiched his 15th and 16th goals of the year around a BOBBY ROBINS second period strike (10th) to spark Elmira. It was the team-high 4th game-winner this season for ROBINS. DAN LaCOSTA picked up his 7th win in turning aside 28 shots before being called up to Syracuse (AHL) the following morning.

Three power play goals for the Jackals was not enough as the Jackals lost their third straight road contest and their second in as may visits to Sovereign Bank Arena. The red hot line of PIERRE-LUC FAUBERT, BENOIT DOUCET and CHAZ JOHNSON all found the goal column with FAUBERT's marker his 19th overall and 7th on the power play, both team-highs. With a 3-2 lead and under three minutes left in regulation, the Devils tied the at 17:42 before BILL LECLERC won it with a left circle drive sixty-three seconds into overtime.

Saturday, February 2nd - v. READING (5-2 W) Att: 4,041 (sellout) Shots: ELM 36-29 PP: 2/10 PK: 7/8

TOMAS KUDELKA scored just thirty-three seconds into the game to touch off a four-goal first period that lead the Jackals to their fifth straight home ice victory. KUDELKA and BENOIT DOUCET finished the night with two goals and an assist each. It was the first two-goal game as a pro for both. The game was marked by 253 penalty minutes thanks mostly to a melee with 6:02 left in the second period. The clubs combined for 164 minutes during an exchange that saw a total of ten game misconducts with five Jackals and four Royals ejected from the game. Elmira finished the game with ten skaters while accumulating a team record 141 penalty minutes.

Sunday, February 3rd - @ JOHNSTOWN (3-2 so W) Att: 1,503 Shots: ELM 28-27 PP: 0/2 PK: 3/3

PIERRE-LUC FAUBERT and CHAZ JOHNSON netted shootout goals that enabled the Jackals to end their three-game road losing streak and pick up their ECHL-best 7th shootout decision of the year. Elmira carried a 2-0 lead into the final period on goals from TREVOR HENDRIKX (5th) and KYLE WHARTON (3rd), but the Chiefs forced overtime on a pair of RYAN GARLOCK strikes. The Jackals secured the extra point when GARLOCK was stopped by JOEL MARTIN in Johnstown's fourth and final attempt.

The Jackals and Chiefs meet for the sixth installment of their nine-game series. Including last week's sweep by the Jackals, Friday's game will mark the third contest between the clubs in a ten-day span. Overall, Elmira leads the season series 3-1-0-1.

Coming off of a combined 253 penalty minute effort in the last game between these North Division foes, the Jackals invade Reading with a 4-1-1-0 lead in the season series in this, the seventh of 11 times the teams face one another this year. Saturday's game begin string of three consecutive trips by the Jackals to southeast Pennsylvania in the season series.

Jackals Bites: The Jackals are on a five-game home winning streak and have won 12 of their last 14 at First Arena...With an average crowd of 3,605 in 21 openings, the Jackals rank 14th in attendance while playing before 95.3% capacity... Recording a club record 141 penalty minutes Saturday night against Reading (of a combined 253, also a club record), the Jackals were whistled for a season-low six minutes Sunday at Johnstown...Elmira's shootout win in Johnstown was the ECHL-best 7th of the year for the Jackals...In that contest, PIERRE-LUC FAUBERT scored his fourth shootout goal to tie for the league lead in that department...CHAZ JOHNSON had his club record 10-game point scoring streak (10+5=15) end in Wednesday's victory over Johnstown, but has points in 12 of his last 14 contests (11+7=18)...Linemate BENOIT DOUCET stretched his team record assist streak to eight games Saturday against Reading, but failed to notch a point Sunday in Johnstown, stalling the second such point streak he has put together this season...DOUCET (45 points) assumed the team lead in scoring over FAUBERT (44 points)...JOEL MARTIN's garnered his 5th shootout win for his 23rd win overall Sunday in Johnstown, both tops in the ECHL...MARTIN has stopped the last 13 shootout attempts by the opposition.
