Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
MEMPHIS -- Chili Buss' two-run triple in the third inning held up as the difference as the Albuquerque Isotopes defeated the Memphis Redbirds, 3-2, at Auto Zone Park. The Isotopes (46-37) are 12-3 against Memphis this season, and they've tied their high-water mark of the season at nine over.
Starting pitcher Matt Palmer, who was born in Memphis, allowed one unearned run in six innings. He struck out four, walked one and allowed five hits.
Sean White, activated from the disabled list before the game, allowed a run in the seventh inning on two singles and a sacrifice fly by Rob Johnson. That trimmed the lead to 3-2.
Red Patterson pitched a scoreless eighth inning, and Kelvin De La Cruz stranded the tying run at second base in the ninth inning as he picked up his fourth save of the season. Memphis starting pitcher Carlos Martinez has made 17 appearances this season between Double-A Springfield, the majors and Triple-A Memphis. His only two losses are against the Topes.
In the first inning, Dee Gordon walked, went to third on an Elian Herrera single, then scored on Alex Castellanos' single up the middle. Castellanos reached base four times with two singles, a walk and a hit batsman.
In the third, Gordon reached out an error by Memphis second baseman Kolten Wong. Two batters later, Castellanos was hit just above the left elbow, then Buss lined the first pitch into the left-center gap to score the two runs. It was Buss' ninth triple this season. He also has 57 RBI on the year.
The finale of the four-game series is Sunday afternoon. Jonathan Sanchez makes his second start for the Isotopes, while Nick Additon will start for Memphis. First pitch will be at 12:35 MT and can be heard on 610 "The Sports Animal" with Josh Suchon on the call.
