Iowa Cubs News Release
Papillion, NE - The Iowa Cubs (41-41) beat the Omaha Storm Chasers (35-46) 5-1 and produced four of their five runs with two-out hits at Werner Park tonight. The Cubs lead this series 2-0 and lead 7-3 in the season series against the Storm Chasers. The Cubs are back at .500 for the second time this season, their best mark of the year. The Memphis Redbirds lost tonight, so the Cubs once again have a one-game lead in the American Northern Division.
The Cubs grabbed the early lead in the top of the first inning when Logan Watkins led off with a single and scored on a two-out double by Dave Sappelt. It was the beginning of a big night for both players. Darnell McDonald led off the top of the second with a single and scored on a two-out single by Watkins. Watkins would finish with a season-high four hits.
In the top of the fourth inning, Luis Flores led off with a double and scored on a base hit by Ty Wright. With one out, Jae-Hoon Ha hit a comebacker to Storm Chasers' starter Justin Marks. Marks threw the ball into centerfield for an error that extended the inning. Two batters later, Sappelt recorded his second two-out RBI of the night with a bloop single to center. Sappelt finished with three hits for the second consecutive game and leads the team with 20 RBI in June.
Marks (1-9) came out after five innings after allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits and suffered the loss. Brian Sanches finished the final four innings for the Storm Chasers and allowed the Cubs' final run in the top of the seventh inning on a two-out single by Wright.
Cubs' starter Chris Rusin (7-7) was just as impressive as the Cubs' offense. Rusin allowed one run on five hits in seven innings for his 10th quality start of the season. The Storm Chasers' only run came in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out, RBI single by Max Ramirez. Rusin has allowed three runs in 22 innings in three starts against the Storm Chasers this season and is 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA (9ER/39.0IP) in six career starts against Omaha. Esmailin Caridad and Eduardo Sanchez each pitched a scoreless inning to finish the game for the Cubs.
The Cubs and Storm Chasers continue this series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Werner Park. RH Nick Struck (4-5, 6.05) will start for the Cubs against LH Chris Dwyer (5-5, 3.52) for the Storm Chasers. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed at iowacubs.com, with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
