Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, Calif. - Behind an offensive onslaught of 19 hits, the Fresno Grizzlies snapped their four-game losing streak with a 9-6 win over the Salt Lake Bees on Friday at Chukchansi Park. Cole Gillespie and Chris Dominguez led Fresno with four hits apiece, helping the Grizzlies match their season-high for hits in a game.
The Grizzlies poured on the offense early on when they recorded seven hits and four runs in the first inning. Gary Brown hit an ominous leadoff home run in the first for his 11th homer of the season. It was his second leadoff roundtripper of the year as well.
The Grizzlies' RBI team leader Brett Pill went hitless but drove in two runs to give him 62 on the season. He scored Nick Noonan in the first inning with a groundout while plating Noonan again in the second inning with a sacrifice fly.
Noonan finished with three hits, all singles, to go along with his two runs scored and one RBI. In three games with Fresno this season, Noonan is 8-for-14 with five RBI.
Kensuke Tanaka also had three hits, two runs scored, and an RBI for Fresno. He drove in his run with an RBI single in the fifth inning that made it 7-5 Grizzlies.
Dominguez added an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI single while Johnny Monell capped the Grizzlies' scoring with a sacrifice fly to score Tanaka in the seventh that gave Fresno a 9-5 lead.
The Bees inflicted most of their damage over the third and fourth innings. Fresno starting pitcher Yusmeiro Petit allowed 10 hits over 4 1/3 innings, with nine of those occurring after the second frame. The right-hander surrendered five runs while striking out two and walking two in his first start since being activated from the disabled list.
Collin Cowgill, in his Salt Lake debut, fueled the Bees' offense by going 4-for-5 with four RBI. The right fielder fell a triple shy of the cycle after he had a double, home run, and two singles. Roberto Lopez and Andrew Romine also each added an RBI for the Bees.
The Grizzlies bullpen held the Bees back by allowing one unearned run over 4 2/3 innings. Mason Tobin earned the win after allowing one hit over 1 2/3 innings. Heath Hembree loaded the bases in the ninth, but in the end, did not allow any runs to record his team-leading 15th save of the season. It was Hembree's first save since June 6th at Salt Lake.
Dan Runzler threw a perfect eighth inning in his second appearance in as many days.
Both Brown and Monell extended their respective on-base streaks. Brown is now in the middle of an 18-game on-base streak, matching the longest by a Grizzlies hitter this season, and Monell is sitting at a 16-game on-base streak.
Roger Kieschnick's first inning single snapped a 0-for-19 stretch. He added another single and walked once.
The Grizzlies and Bees will meet for game three of the series on Saturday at 7:05 pm. Right-hander Mitch Lively will make his eighth start of the season for Fresno and face Salt Lake righty Jarrett Grube.
