Sounds Swept in Double Dip

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds dropped both games of their doubleheader Friday night at Greer Stadium against the visiting Oklahoma City RedHawks by the scores of 5-1 and 6-3.

In the opener, Oklahoma City edged the Sounds, 5-1, in extras, plating four runs in the ninth inning.

With the loss, Nashville (28-53) fell to 1-4 in extra-inning play this season.

Jimmy Nelson turned in another strong outing for Nashville but took a no-decision for his work after allowing one run on five hits over 5 1/3 innings of work.

Hainley Statia extended his hitting streak to six games with a leadoff double off Brett Oberholtzer in the third and scored the contest's first run on Blake Davis' one-out, opposite-field two-bagger down the left field line.

Oklahoma City tied the contest at 1-1 in the top of the sixth when Jonathan Villar led off with a single, moved to second on a Nelson balk, and later scored on George Springer's RBI double off the left field wall off Sounds closer Rob Wooten, who suffered just his third blown save in 19 chances.

The Sounds missed a chance to end the contest in regulation after Hunter Morris ripped a one-out double down the right field line in the seventh to chase Oberholtzer and put a man in scoring position. However, Khris Davis followed with a lineout to center and Morris was doubled off second to end the threat and send the game to extra frames.

In the second extra frame, the RedHawks sent 10 men to the dish and plated four runs against Travis Webb to take their first lead of the night.

Oklahoma City put runners on the corners with one out against Travis Webb (1-3) when Springer drew a walk and moved to third on a Brandon Laird single before the left-hander walked Marwin Gonzalez to load the bags. Carlos Perez followed with a go-ahead RBI single to left that was booted by Davis to allow a second run to score on the play.

The scoring continued as Jose Martinez laid down a perfectly-executed suicide squeeze bunt to plate Gonzalez then Perez scored one batter later when Morris was unable to field Robbie Grossman's two-out grounder.

Wade LeBlanc retired the Sounds in order in the bottom of the ninth to close out the Oklahoma City win.

In the nightcap, a three-run fourth inning doomed the Nashville Sounds (28-54), losing to the RedHawks by a 6-3 margin.

Tied 2-2 in the fourth inning, Oklahoma City worked three singles and a two-run double off of Sounds starter Zach Kroenke (4-10) to take a three run lead. Ruben Sosa hit the third single to give the RedHawks a 3-2 lead and Jonathan Villar, two-for-four, followed with the double.

Kroenke finished with a career-high nine strikeouts in a seven-inning complete game effort. The lefty surrendered six runs, five earned, in the loss, in which he allowed eight hits.

The RedHawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with a solo home run from lead-off batter Jonathan Villar, but the Sounds quickly answered with two runs in the home half of the inning.

With two outs, Blake Lalli singled to left field and was driven in by Hunter Morris' triple off the right-field wall. Khris Davis followed with an RBI-double to give the Sounds their only lead.

RedHawks centerfielder George Springer, who was promoted from Double-A on Thursday, where he had 19 home runs, tied the game with his first Triple-A home run.

The Sounds picked up their final run of the game in the sixth inning. Designated hitter Blake Lalli, two-for-three, hit a single off the first baseman to move Josh Prince to third base and infielder Hainley Statia drove in Prince with a groundout.

RedHawks' Jake Buchanan (1-0) made his first Triple-A start a good one, getting the win for his five innings of work for Oklahoma City. The right-handed pitcher held Nashville to two runs on four hits, fanning two and walking none, and retired 13 of his last 14 batters faced. RedHawks reliever Josh Zeid picked up his seventh save in a scoreless seventh.

The loss, coupled with their 5-1 game one defeat, makes the Sounds 0-3-1 in double headers this season.

The teams continue the series with a 6:35 p.m. contest on Saturday night. Left-hander Chris Narveson (1-3, 7.04) will man the bump for the Sounds to face Oklahoma City right-hander Brad Peacock (2-2, 3.38). The first 1,000 kids through the gates will receive a youth jersey courtesy of McDonald's. The game will be followed by a Fireworks Extravaganza powered by Nashville's News 2.
