Tacoma Rainiers News Release

TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers four-game winning streak came to a close following a 9-0 loss to the Las Vegas 51s at Cheney Stadium on Friday night.

Tacoma had strung together 23.0 consecutive scoreless innings prior to allowing the 51s to take a 1-0 edge in the top of the second. Catcher Francisco Pena recorded the first of his five RBI after hitting a sacrifice fly that plated first baseman Ike Davis.

Pena stretched the 51s lead to two runs after hitting another sacrifice fly in the fourth. Designated hitter Kai Gronauer upped Vegas' advantage to 4-0 with a two-out two-run home run one at-bat later in the frame.

The 51s delivered another big blow in the form of a five-hit, five run frame in the sixth. Pena hit a three-run home run and Ryan Sandoval and Brian Bixler each hit solo shots to boost Tacoma's deficit to nine runs.

The Rainiers combined to post nine combined hits, led by two-hit efforts from Abraham Almonte and Carlos Triunfel. The outfielder Almonte collected a pair of singles and Triunfel went 2-for-5 with a double in his first game since he was optioned from Seattle earlier in the day.

Reigning Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week James Paxton was dealt the loss after surrendering seven runs on 10 hits over 5.1 innings. The left-hander struck out five 51s batters and walked one in his 16th start for the Rainiers this season.

At 48-34, Tacoma boasts the best record in the PCL and own a 4.0-game lead over Colorado Springs and Salt Lake in the Pacific Northern Division.

The Rainiers (48-33) host the third game of a four-game series with the 51s at 7 p.m. tomorrow, June 29. Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (2-2, 2.23) is scheduled to start for Tacoma against Las Vegas' right-hander Jacob deGrom (0-0, 0.77).
