Manchester Monarchs News Release

MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs dropped their first game in regulation, a 3-2 decision, to the St. John's IceCaps at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night.

Manchester (5-1-1-2) leads the Atlantic Division with 13 points. St. John's (3-3-1-0) ranks third in the Atlantic Division with seven points.

"I thought we had a tough time finding our legs," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "Compete level was nowhere near what it's been until the last 10 minutes. We turned it up and played with some desperation. But there wasn't enough preparation for our guys and we came out relatively strong but we had some guys who weren't pulling their weight. I think that it really cost us. We needed everybody going and you're going to be playing a team back-to-back in 24 hours. You need everybody going but we had some guys that were less than what we had hoped for."

The Icecaps extended their lead with left wing Jason Jaffray's second goal of the season at 8:10 of the second period. Left wing Andrew Gordon fed right wing J.C. Lipon on the end red line to the right of goaltender Martin Jones. Lipon skated behind the net and set up in the trapezoid before he found Jaffray in front for the net. Jaffray beat Jones to give the IceCaps a 3-1 advantage.

At the 4:09 mark of the first period, center Linden Vey put the Monarchs on the board with his second goal of the season. Right wing Tyler Toffoli carried the puck over the IceCaps blueline and sent a pass over to Vey in the right face-off circle. Vey dragged the puck and wristed a shot past netminder Eddie Pasquale on the stick side. Defenseman Derek Forbort picked up an assist on the opening goal.

The IceCaps answered quickly with a marker of their own at 4:48 of the opening period to tie the game at 1-1. Center Eric O'Dell side-stepped Monarchs center Jordan Weal along the left wing half-wall and skated through the left face-off circle. The puck popped free from O'Dell and fell to the feet of left wing Carl Klingberg between the hash marks. Klingberg gained control of the puck and snapped a shot past Jones to even the game. Center Kael Mouillierat assisted on Klingberg's first tally of the season.

The Icecaps were able to capitalize on a Monarchs penalty with a goal by Gordon, his third tally of the season, at 10:53 of the first. Cycling the puck on the power play, defenseman Will O'Neill passed the puck to O'Dell on the bottom of the left face-off circle. O'Dell tossed the puck on net and Jones made the initial save. Gordon was on the doorstep to jam in the rebound to give the IceCaps a 2-1 lead.

The Monarchs cut the deficit to one goal when defenseman Nick Deslauriers picked up his third tally of the season at 15:43 of the third period. Weal sent a pass through the slot to right wing Brandon Kozun that was stopped by the left pad of Pasquale. Deslauriers was on the doorstep to pick up the rebound and move to within one goal.

Jones (5-1-2) took his first regulation loss of the season stopping 28-of-31 shots. Pasquale (3-3-0) earned his third win of the season making 25 saves on 27 shots.

Manchester was 0-for-2 on the power play. St. John's went 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
