Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Despite another third period rally, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins were handed their first loss of the season as the Binghamton Senators prevailed in the shootout, 4-3at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Penguins found themselves down 2-0 in the first period after a power play goals scored 18 seconds apart by the Senators. With Binghamton on a 5-on-3 power play midway through the first period, Stephane Da Costa drove home a one-timer at 13:44, slipping the puck just under the glove of Penguins goalie Jeff Deslauriers.
On the ensuing 5-on-4 power play, Matt Puempel doubled the Senators' lead, taking a cross-zone feed from Cody Ceci and hitting the back of the net with a wrist shot from the high slot.
Early in the second, with the Penguins already on a 5-on-4, Senators forward Wacey Hamilton was whistled for covering the puck resulting in a Pens two-man advantage. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's Tom Kuhnhackl took advantage of a pass from Brian Gibbons, picking the top corner of the net and cutting Binghamton's lead in half.
Later in the period, the Penguins seemed primed to even the score after hopping on a five-minute major power play. Instead it was the Senators going back up by two when Cole Schneider intercepted a pass at center ice and broke in shorthanded. The Binghamton forward slipped a backhand shot through the pads of Deslauriers to make the score, 3-1, with 4:35 left until the intermission.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, who had outscored opponents by 15-4 in the third coming into the contest, tallied another two in the final 20 minutes of regulation to eventually overtime and the shootout.
Just 1:53 into the third, the Penguins Harry Zolnierczyk was able to deposit the puck into the net after a turnover by Senators goalie Nathan Lawson. Brian Gibbons shoveled the puck out front for his second assist of the night as Zolnierczyk drove the shot home, bringing the Pens back within one.
Minutes later, Adam Payerl scored a greasy goal from in front of the net, knotting the score, 3-3.
In the shootout, Lawson stopped all four Penguins shooters he faced, while Binghamton's Da Costa and Puempel both scored again to take home the win for the Senators.
Lawson turned away 33-of-36 for Binghamton. Deslauriers made 18 saves as his record fell to 5-0-0-1.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins return home on Saturday, Oct. 26 to face the Norfolk Admirals at 7:05 p.m. Tune into all the live game action on MyNetworkTV and the Sports Hub 102.
