Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The B-Sens won 4-3 in their first shootout of the 2013-2014 season against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins despite surrendering two goals in the third period. Nathan Lawson earned his fourth victory of the season with 33 saves throughout the night including all of the Penguins shootout attempts.
Binghamton got things rolling in the first period off their red-hot power play unit when Stephane Da Costa took a feed from Chris Wideman and put it past Penguins goalie Jeff Deslauriers. Still working their power play less than a minute later, Matt Puempel made it 2-0 Binghamton with just over 14 minutes to go in the first.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was able to pull within a goal when Tom Kuhnhackl put a power-play marker past Lawson just 1:50 into the second period. However, Cole Schneider brought the home team back to a two goal lead at the 15:45 spot after stealing the puck from the Penguins Brian Dumoulin for his second shorthanded goal in two games.
The Penguins controlled much of the third period outshooting the B-Sens 15-7. Goals from Harry Zolnierczyk and Adam Payerl knotted the game at 3-3 to force overtime.
After neither team could convert in the extra period, the game moved to a shootout. Da Costa and Puempel were able to beat Deslauriers while Lawson turned aside all four of the Penguins tries to give Binghamton the win.
Suffering his first loss of the season, Deslauriers managed to stop 18 of 21 shots faced. Binghamton went 2 for 3 on their power-play opportunities while the Penguins went 1 for 7.
The B-Sens are on their home ice again tomorrow when they host the Adirondack Phantoms for the first of six meetings. Tickets are available by calling the Binghamton Senators Executive office at (607) 722-7367 or stopping by in person between 8:00 a.m. and game time.
