IceCaps Slip Past Monarchs 3-2
October 25, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release
Jason Jaffray's tally in the middle frame stood up as the game-winner as the St. John's IceCaps hung on for a 3-2 win over the first place Manchester Monarchs Friday at Verizon Wireless Arena.
Carl Klingberg and Andrew Gordon also scored for the IceCaps while Eric O'Dell notched two assists for his team-leading sixth and seventh points of the season. Eddie Pasquale got win number three with a 25-save performance.
Manchester got off to a fast start on Linden Vey's second of the season 4:09 after the opening faceoff, but the IceCaps tied it up just 39 seconds later. Carl Klingberg grabbed the puck in the slot and fired a wrister past Martin Jones to knot things at one apiece.
Midway through the frame St. John's capitalized after Manchester found itself in penalty trouble. At the end of a brief 5-on-3 power play, O'Dell's shot from the left side of the net bounced to Gordon in front, and the veteran forward deposited his third of the season, and second on the power play, to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.
St. John's extended its lead to 3-1 at 9:20 of the second frame on Jaffray's second of the season. JC Lipon shook off a Monarchs defender and circled the net, sending a beautiful pass cross-crease to Jaffray for the easy tap-in and a two-goal advantage.
Around the five-minute mark of the third the Monarchs narrowed the gap to one. Nick Deslauriers tipped in a spinning pass from Brandon Kozun for his third of the season to make it 3-2, but that was as close as the Monarchs would come.
The clubs face off again Saturday afternoon (4:30 PM NT) for the second of two games at Verizon Wireless Arena. Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers at www.stjohnsicecaps.com and on 930 AM This is Newfoundland Labrador. Pregame show begins a half hour before puck drop.
