Swift Current Broncos News Release
Brandon, Man. - The Swift Current Broncos (17-23-4-1) got a masterful 46-save performance from Reid Dyck and Connor Hvidston scored the overtime winner as they picked up a 4-3 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings (21-15-3-2) Friday night.
Reid Dyck was the star of the opening period in Brandon as the Broncos goaltender turned aside all 15 shots sent his way, including a right-pad stop off Ridley Greig off a centering pass from the goal line.
The Broncos had three power plays in the opening period but it was the Wheat Kings who generated the better scoring chances, getting a number of looks while shorthanded.
Swift Current's penalty killing unit then came up huge late in the period as the Broncos were called for two penalties just 19 seconds apart, but they were able to kill off the 1:41 5-on-3 power play by the Wheat Kings to get the game to the intermission scoreless. Shots were 15-5 Brandon after 20 minutes.
The Broncos were called for a third straight penalty early in the second, but took advantage while shorthanded. After Cole Nagy was stopped on a breakaway, Mathew Ward found the loose puck on the goal line and centered for Nagy who fired a one timer through the five hole of Carson Bjarnason to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead 1:40 into the period.
The lead lasted for only a minute, as the Wheat Kings responded by scoring on the same power play with Markus Kallionkieli tapping in a backdoor feed to tie the game.
The Wheat Kings then scored another power play goal two minutes later as Chad Nychuk blasted in a one timer off a faceoff, giving Brandon their first lead of the night.
Their lead lasted just 45 seconds as it was the Broncos turn to respond quickly. Grayson Burzynski picked up a loose puck in the high slot and stepped around a defenceman, creating a 2-on-0 chance down low. Burzynski elected to keep the puck, pulling it to his forehand and beating Bjarnason on the blocker side for his third goal of the season to tie the game 5:24 into the second period.
After the Wheat Kings hit a pair of posts in the period the Broncos would once again take the lead. Kayden Sadhra-Kang gained the Brandon line and dropped the puck off for Karson King. King skated into the right circle and fired the puck on goal, beating Bjarnason through traffic for his first WHL goal, putting the Broncos on top 3-2.
Swift Current held on to that lead into the second intermission with the shots 31-18 Brandon.
Sam McGinley hit a pair of posts in the third period as the game remained 3-2 into the final minutes before the Wheat Kings would tie the game off the rush. Nate Danielson took a pass from Ridley Greig and fired a low shot from the left circle, beating Dyck under the glove to pull the Wheat Kings even with 5:34 to go in regulation. The game went into overtime with the shots 47-22 Wheat Kings.
Both teams had chances off the opening faceoff in overtime, with Owen Pickering being stopped by Bjarnason in tight before Greig was stopped by Dyck on the doorstep moments later.
Deep in the Brandon zone, Josh Filmon had the puck in the corner and spotted Hvidston coming off the bench, feeding him the puck. Hvidston took the pass then cut across the slot before firing a shot off the post and in, giving the Broncos a 4-3 win.
The Broncos now continue their short two-game trip through Manitoba with an 8:00 game against the Winnipeg ICE (33-11-2-1).
