February 12, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
Spokane, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs couldn't keep pace with the red-hot Portland Winterhawks on Friday night at Spokane Arena, losing 8-1. Forward Berkly Catton, the first overall pick in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft, made his WHL debut for the Chiefs, finishing with four shots on goal.
Portland got the scoring underway early in first when Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Jaydon Dureau snuck one low inside the left post for his 13th of the season. They added a second at 9:21 when Aidan Litke found a seam to the net from the left circle. The Winterhawks made it 3-0 four minutes later when defenseman Ryan McCleary jumped into an odd-man rush to snap home his fifth goal of the year.
The Chiefs got on the board late in the first when Las Vegas native Erik Atchison tapped home a rebound on a power play. Forward Nick McCarry and defenseman Graham Sward earned assists on the play.
Portland reclaimed the three-goal lead at 5:40 of the second when team-leading scorer Cross Hanas capitalized on a penalty shot to beat goalie Manny Panghli and make it 4-1. Marek Alscher scored at 17:05 to make it a 5-1 game headed into the second intermission.
The Winterhawks added three in the final twenty minutes, including another from McCleary and two from Hanas as he finished the hat trick.
Panghli finished 36-for-44 in net for the Chiefs while Taylor Gauthier started for Portland and went 25-for-26. The Chiefs finished 1-for-6 on the power play and 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.
