Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Medicine Hat, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (34-11-2-1) scored four unanswered goals on Saturday night as they erased a 3-1 second period deficit to beat the Medicine Hat Tigers (9-29-3-1) 5-3 at Co-Op Place.
The Oil Kings came out firing in the first period, outshooting the Tigers by a count of 16-4 but had to settle for a 1-1 tie at the first intermission.
The Tigers took the lead just over nine minutes into the game as Dru Krebs was able to re-direct a pass into the slot from Oren Shtrom up over the shoulder of Kolby Hay.
Carter Souch evened the score with 3:40 left in the period as he took a pass from Justin Sourdif in the natural-zone and showed great patience as he weaved his way from the right-wing boards to the left-circle where he would snap a hot shot over the glove of Beckett Langkow to even the score at one with his 14th goal of the season.
The Tigers were able to build a brief 3-1 lead early in the second period as they got goals from Steven Arp and Krebs 1:49 apart in the opening six-and-a-half minutes of the middle stanza but just 20 seconds after Krebs' second of the night, Luke Prokop fired home his 10th goal of the season as he jumped on a loose puck in the right-circle of the Tigers zone and muscled a shot through Langkow.
Near the end of the period, the Oil Kings would not only equalize the score, but finally pull ahead with a couple of late markers.
Cole Miller tied the game at 17:38 as he was able to chip home a rebound after John Szabo was denied on a chance in front of the Tigers net and then just under two minutes later, Josh Williams, playing in his 250th career game, was setup in the slot by Jalen Luypen where he would rip a perfectly placed shot over the right-shoulder of Langkow for his 23rd of the season.
The Oil Kings continued the momentum into the third period as just 1:04 into the final 20 minutes, Jake Neighbours increased the Oil Kings lead to 5-3 as he took a breakaway pass from Dylan Guenther at the Medicine Hat blueline and made no mistake firing a low shot between the legs of Langkow for his 13th goal of the campaign.
Late in the third period, the Tigers had a pair of glorious scoring chances on a power play denied by Hay as the Oil Kings would cruise to the 5-3 victory and extending their win streak to four games.
Hay finished the night making 13 saves for his 10th win of the season, while Langkow made 31 saves in the losing cause. Both teams finished the night zero-for-six on the power play.
Next up, the Oil Kings return home on Saturday, February 19 to take on the Saskatoon Blades at 7:00 PM.
