Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Prince Albert, Sask. - Carson Latimer's goal 6:35 into the third period ended up being the game winner as the Prince Albert Raiders (17-25-1-1) picked up a 3-2 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes (18-21-2-1) on Saturday night at the Art Hauser Centre.
Evan Herman and Reece Vitelli also scored in the win for the Raiders. Sloan Stanick registered a pair of assists.
The two teams skated to a scoreless first period. The Hurricanes peppered Tikhon Chaika with 16 shots in the frame, but the Raiders goaltender stood tall as his team killed off three penalties.
Herman broke the scoreless deadlock 1:38 into the second period. Streaking down the left wing, Herman tried to centre a pass for Carson Latimer. The pass went off the stick of Hurricanes defenceman Nolan Bentham and got past Bryan Thomson to give Herman his 17th goal of the season.
Vitelli doubled the Raiders' advantage less than two minutes later. Stanick dug the puck out of the corner. He found Vitelli alone at the left faceoff circle and the Raiders captain's wrist shot beat Thomson on the glove side for his 16th of the season, giving the Raiders a 2-0 advantage.
The Hurricanes cut into the lead with 6:45 to play in the middle frame. After a collision in the slot, Joe Arntsen was able to pick up the puck to left of the net. He made a quick pass across the crease to Jett Jones who tapped it in to make it a 2-1 game.
Arnsten then tied it for Lethbridge with 4:31 left in the second. Brayden Edwards' shot was stopped by Chaika, but the rebound slid to the point. The Hurricanes defenceman was able to step into a slapshot that got through traffic in the crease to beat Chaika to tie things up at 2-2 heading into the intermission.
Latimer broke the deadlock at the 6:35 mark of the third. Stanick forced a turnover at the blueline as the Hurricanes tried to exit the zone. He slid a pass under the stick of a Hurricanes defenceman to Latimer. The Ottawa Senators prospect got his shot from the top of the crease through Thomson to put the Raiders up 3-2 with his 10th of the season.
The Hurricanes pressed for the equalizer, including a late power-play opportunity. A pair of key blocked shots by Stanick and Vitelli in the closing moments of the game helped to seal the victory.
Chaika finished the game with 44 saves, one shy of tying his season high, to record his 11th win of the season. Thomson stopped 19 shots in the loss for the Hurricanes.
The Raiders are off until next weekend when they host a pair of East Division rivals. On Friday night, the Regina Pats visit the Art Hauser Centre; the Raiders take on the Moose Jaw Warriors in Prince Albert on the following night.
Tickets for both games are available at the Raiders Office during working hours and at SaskTix.ca any time.
