Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Charleston, WV- July 1, 2014) - The West Virginia Power fell in the opener of a three-game series with the Hickory Crawdads 11-6 on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park. Two home runs with two outs in the fifth and five more runs in the ninth gave Hickory the win.
The Crawdads took the advantage in the fourth with two runs behind an RBI single from Jairo Beras. West Virginia answered with a Kawika Emsley-Pai RBI base knock in the bottom half to cut the lead to one.
Hickory, however, came right back with a three spot in the fifth all with two outs. Ryan Cordell got it started with a solo home run followed by a two-run blast off the bat of Kellin Deglan. The Power put one on the board in the fifth and sixth on another Emsley-Pai RBI single and a Jeff Roy sacrifice fly. Then, in the eighth, the Power tied the game on a JaCoby Jones three-run blast.
In the ninth, Hickory responded with three runs to earn the victory when Henry Hirsch walked in one run followed by a two-RBI base knock for Ronald Guzman and an Evan Van Hoosier RBI triple.
Power reliever Henry Hirsch (1-4) was charged with the loss as Hickory hurler Cody Kendall (8-2) earned the win. Harold Ramirez extended his league-best hitting streak to 23 games in the win. It is now the longest in the South Atlantic League this season and has broken Starling Marte's Power franchise record set in 2009.
West Virginia hosts the Hickory Crawdads on Wednesday, July 2, at Appalachian Power Park. Power right-hander Buddy Borden will toe the rubber against the Crawdads Cole Wiper. For tickets or more information, call 304-344-2287 or visit www.wvpower.com.
