The Intimidators (10-3) remain 1.0 game back of first place Hickory (11-2) in the SAL Northern Division Second Half Standings.
Independence Day Fireworks: Thursday, July 3, Intimidators face the Delmarva Shorebirds to wrap up this 7-game home stand followed by fireworks presented by the City of Kannapolis and Centralina Orthopaedics. On Friday, July 4, fans are invited back to CMC-NorthEast Stadium for our All-American Community Celebration & Fireworks presented by the City of Kannapolis. Independence Day festivities include inflatables for the kids, a dunk tank, an apple pie baking contest, a little league game, a patriot parade for kids, and the best fireworks show of the year.
Intimidating Starter: Thaddius Lowry, 19, makes his ninth start of the season and second against Delmarva. The Shorebirds tagged him with a loss in his second start of the year, scoring three runs (two earned) on nine hits over 4.0 innings. In his last three starts, Lowry has spun a career-high 6.0 innings, including a win in his most recent outing on June 27 against Charleston. After opening his season by going 0-3 with a 7.59 in May, the White Sox fifth round pick in the June 2013 draft enjoyed a strong month of June, going 3-1 with a 3.21 ERA in five starts. He spun a complete-game 5-inning no-hitter in a rain-shortened game at West Virginia on June 3, the first complete game no-no by an Intimidator June 10, 2003, when Brian Miller no-hit the Greensboro Bats (7 innings). Lowry made his pro debut last summer in the Advanced Rookie Appalachian League with Bristol, going 3-5 with a 5.48 ERA in 15 games (seven starts). The Sox selected him in the fifth round of the June 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Spring (Texas) High School.
Dealin' for Delmarva: Steven Brault, 22, makes his 14th start of the season and first against the Intimidators. Brault has struck out six or more batters while working at least six innings in each of his last four starts. He ranks second in the SAL with a 1.01 WHIP and third among starters in fewest baserunners/9 IP ratio (10.11). He is off to an 0-2 start to the second half and gave up five runs on 10 hits over 6.0 innings in his last start on June 26 against West Virginia. Brault has worked 7.0 complete innings three times this season and has allowed just one home run in 85 innings. The Orioles drafted Brault in the 11th round of the June 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Regis University. He made his professional debut last season with Short-Season Aberdeen, going 1-2 with a 2.09 ERA in 12 games (12 starts) for the IronBirds in the NYPL.
About Last Night:Three left-handed pitchers combined to shut down the Shorebirds in a 5-2 win on Tuesday night. Andre Wheeler, Jordan Guerrero, and Ben Brewster struck out 13 batters while walking just one to pitch the Intimidators to the team's seventh straight win. With the game tied, 2-2, Jeremy Dowdy put Kannapolis ahead with his first professional home run, a solo shot in the fourth inning. Trey Michalczewski added a home run (8) in the eighth. Delmarva's Mitch Horacek matched his career high with nine strikeouts, which he set against Kannapolis in May, however the left-hander took the loss for the Shorebirds.
Kiss It Goodbye: Trey Michalczewski blasted his team-leading eighth home run of the season on Tuesday, hitting a home run for the second straight game. It's the second time this season that the 19-year-old third baseman has gone yard in consecutive games, also accomplishing the feat June 8-9. On Monday, Michalczewski recorded his second inside-the-park HR of 2014. The 7th round pick in the June 2013 draft ranks tied for third in the SAL with 79 games played.
Engel's In The Outfield: Fresh off the disabled list and an 8-game rehab stint with the AZL White Sox, Adam Engel returned to the Intimidators lineup to go 1-3 with two stolen bases Tuesday. He leads Kannapolis with 19 stolen bases.
Roll Weevils: The Intimidators have won a season-high seven straight games, surpassing a six-game winning streak from April 21-26. This is the team's longest winning streak since winning nine in a row May 25-June 3, 2012. Kannapolis has also won a season-high five straight at home.
Broadcast: This season, all 70 home games and select road games are broadcast on the Kannapolis Intimidators Baseball Network available at IntimidatorsBaseball.com and on the TuneIn Radio App with Josh Feldman, now in his fourth season with the team.
