Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Kannapolis, NC - The Delmarva Shorebirds stumbled in the opener against the Kannapolis Intimidators. A trio of lefties for Kannapolis held the Shorebirds' bats quiet, managing just five hits in a 5-2 defeat.

Delmarva got off to an early lead thanks to a defensive miscue by Kannapolis. On the first at-bat of the game, Lucas Herbst reached on a missed catch at first base by Danny Hayes. Herbst ended up on second, and later stole third base to set up the scoring opportunity. Drew Dosch lined a base hit to break the ice.

Kannapolis came right back against Shorebirds' starter Mitch Horacek. Trey Michalczewski ripped an RBI double down to the right field line to tie the game at 1-1. In the second, Nolan Early hooked a triple to the right corner and then scored on a wild pitch to give the Intimidators their first lead.

Delmarva deadlocked the game once again with an RBI double by Chance Sisco that split the left-center gap. The tie did not last long as Jeremy Dowdy lifted his first professional home run, a solo shot to take back the lead for Kannapolis in the fourth.

The Intimidators extended their lead with an RBI grounder by Cleuluis Rondon in the fifth inning. Garrett Cortright made his Shorebirds' debut in relief, allowing a leadoff home run to Michalczewski in the eighth inning.

Andre Wheeler earned his first victory of the season, Jordan Guerrero went three scoreless in relief, and Ben Brewster picked up his first save of the year. Mitch Horacek fell to 4-7 with a loss for Delmarva, while Alex Santana pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.

The Shorebirds and Intimidators continue their three-game series on Wednesday evening. Left-hander Steven Brault (7-4, 3.07) will start against Intimidators' right-hander Thad Lowry (3-4, 4.42). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.
