(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) The Greensboro Grasshoppers lost an early six-run lead, but went on to a 16-12 win over the Lexington Legends Tuesday night. The two teams combined for 37 hits, and there were two grand slam home runs.
Greensboro's Austin Dean was four-for-five, including a grand slam and a double. Lexington's Alfredo Escalera was four-for-six with two home runs and four runs batted in. The Legends had a season-high 20 hits in the game. Elier Hernandez had four hits for Lexington. The only player on either team without a hit was Greensboro's Carlos Lopez, and he drove in three runs.
Greensboro scored six runs in the top of the second on five hits and two Lexington errors. Austin Dean doubled, Avery Romero singled and Chad Wallach singled to produce the first run. Kentrell Dewitt's sacrifice bunt was bobbled by third baseman Mauricio Ramos, leaving the bases loaded. Frankfort native and former University of Kentucky star J.T. Riddle singled, loading the bases again. Consecutive force plays at second base brought home two more runs.
But the Legends came back to tie the game in the fourth inning. Ramos doubled and scored on a single by Hernandez. Chad Johnson and Humberto Arteaga followed with singles, loading the bases, and Dex Kjerstad hit a 400-foot grand slam to left center field, cutting the lead to one at 6-5. Escalera then doubled and scored the tying run on a two-out double by Schwindel.
The Grasshoppers broke the tie with four runs in the sixth inning. Dewitt led off with a home run. Avila singled, and Perez walked. Both scored on a triple by Riddle. Riddle came home on a ground out by Lopez, and Greensboro led 10-6.
Escalera homered for the Legends in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 10-7. Greensboro added a run in the seventh and scored five in the top of the ninth, four coming on a grand slam by Dean.
The Legends came back with five in the bottom of the ninth, three scoring on Escalera's second home run.
