Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Kannapolis, NC - The Delmarva Shorebirds battled back, but it was not enough in a 6-4 defeat to the Kannapolis Intimidators. Delmarva (44-39, 6-8) scored three runs in the ninth inning to bring the tying run to the plate. However, the Intimidators escaped the hold on for their eighth straight win.

Kannapolis used the long ball to great effect off Steven Brault. The Shorebirds' lefty had only allowed one home run all year, before giving up two long balls to the Intimidators. First, Carl Thomore lifted a grand slam in the second inning. Ryan Leonards hit his first professional home run with a solo shot in the fifth.

Delmarva's first run came with the help of an Intimidators' error. Creede Simpson scored after a throwing error by Christian Stringer at second base. Thad Lowry went six innings for Kannapolis with only the one unearned run allowed.

Trailing 6-1 after eight innings, Delmarva fought tooth and nail in the ninth. Another error helped the Shorebirds' cause after Stringer misplayed a hard hit bouncer from Chance Sisco. Conor Bierfeldt roped a two-run double to the left-center gap to make it 6-3. Bierfeldt then scampered home on a two-base wild pitch as Jose Brito and Brett Austin left home plate uncovered.

After a single by Austin Wynns, the Shorebirds had the tying run at the plate. Brito buckled down to strikeout Anthony Vega and get a flyball out from Anthony Caronia to end the game.

Thad Lowry improved to 4-4 with the win, while Steven Brault fell to 7-5 with his third straight loss. Conor Bierfeldt went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs in the losing effort.

The Shorebirds will conclude their weeklong road trip on Thursday evening. Left-hander Luis Gonzalez (2-0, 2.65) will square off against right-hander Robinson Leyer (4-4, 2.82) for Kannapolis. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.
