Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (July 1, 2014) - Three left-handed pitchers combined to shut down the Shorebirds en route to the Intimidators' seventh straight win on Tuesday night at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. Kannapolis beat Delmarva, 5-2, to extend its longest winning streak of the season while improving to 39-41, 10-3 in the Second Half.
Andre Wheeler struck out six batters over 5.0 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk to pick up his first win of the season. Wheeler (1-2) then turned things over to Jordan Guerrero, who faced the minimum over 3.0 innings. Guerrero struck out five batters. Ben Brewester, the White Sox 15th round pick in the June 2014 First-Year Player Draft, worked around a double for a scoreless ninth inning and his first professional save (1).
Wheeler, Guerrero, and Brewster combined to strike out 13 batters while walking just one.
Jeremy Dowdy broke a 2-2 tie with his first professional home run, a solo shot to left field with two outs in the bottom of the fourth for a 3-2 lead.
Trey Michalczewski, who raced around the bases for an inside-the-park home run one night earlier, drove a ball over the wall in right-center field in the eighth inning for a 5-2 lead. Michalczewski finished the night 2-3 with 2 RBI and his team-leading eighth home run.
After Delmarva capitalized on an Intimidators first-inning error for a 1-0 lead, Michalczewski tied the game with an RBI-double in the bottom of the first, scoring Cleuluis Rondon. Nolan Earley tripled with two outs in the second inning and scored on a wild pitch for a 2-1 lead.
Mitch Horacek matched his career-high with nine strikeouts, which he set against Kannapolis earlier this season. The Shorebirds starter allowed four runs on five hits and a walk in a loss.
The Intimidators can clinch a series win on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. when Kannapolis hosts Game 2 of this 3-game series. For ticket and promotional information, call the F&M Bank Box Office at (704) 932-3267 or visit IntimidatorsBaseball.com.
