Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Forward Jack Downing earned a hat trick to lead the Cincinnati Cyclones (27-25-1-5) over the Fort Wayne Komets (38-14-2-4) by a 3-1 final score in front of 7,185 at U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday night.
Cyclones newcomer Jack Downing came alive in the opening period to give his team an early cushion; at 3:42, he sent a wrist shot past Mark Guggenberger (L, 13 saves, 7-13-1-1) from the inside the left circle to give his team a 1-0 edge. Then, less than two minutes later, Downing struck again on a power play one timer that soared past the Komets goaltender, making it 2-0. At the other end of the ice, Rob Madore (W, 31 saves, 12-14-1-4) turned aside all eight shots he faced in the frame to keep his team in the driver's seat through 20 minutes.
The Komets cut their deficit in half just 6:34 into the middle stanza when James Martin beat Madore with a shot from the right point, making it a 2-1 game. Cincinnati responded, though, at 13:20 when Downing completed a hat trick with another power play blast from the left circle. He is the first Cyclones player this season to net a three-goal game or better and gave his team a 3-1 edge through two periods.
With a multi-goal cushion, the Cyclones continued to buckle down defensively as the third period began. And although they mustered just two shots in the final 20 minutes, Madore's great goaltending and an overall control of the tempo for Cincinnati led to a 3-1 victory as the Komets failed to mount the comeback.
Cincinnati will close out its three-game weekend tomorrow evening as the same two teams hook up at Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne. The puck drops at 5:00pm with pregame coverage on the Cyclones Radio Network beginning at 4:40pm. Fans can also WATCH the action live at the Game Time Sports Bar & Grill.
The Cyclones will be back on the ice at U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday, March 25 when they play host to the South Carolina Stingrays at 7:30pm! We invite you to COME ON DOWN for our 2nd annual Game Show Night. Plus, fans 21 and up can enjoy $1 beers! Call 513.421.PUCK to secure your seats and for more details.
