Stingrays Set Record against Shorthanded Glads
March 14, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays (36-18-1-6) broke a seven-year-old ECHL record on Saturday night by winning their 18th consecutive game, a 6-0 shutout of the Gladiators (17-38-3-2), who were skating four players short. Jeff Jakaitis shut out his former team for the third consecutive game with a 21-save performance, while Marcus Perrier scored four goals and added an assist.
With the Gladiators skating two players short to begin the game, the Stingrays jumped on their advantages to take an early lead. The captain Andrew Rowe opened the scoring at 2:01 with a snap-wrister that beat Kent Patterson over his right shoulder.
A little under three minutes later, Marcus Perrier scored his first goal of the night on a fluky play. Perrier was striding across the offensive blue line and dumped a puck in on Patterson. The Gwinnett netminder misjudged the puck, and missed on his attempt to punch the puck away. It squeaked between his pads and to the back of the net at 4:51.
Finally, with three minutes remaining in the period, Perrier scored his second goal of the period cleaning up a mess on the left post. The initial shot by Drew MacKenzie went wide, and the follow-up was saved, so Perrier jumped in to pick the corner of the net again and give SC a 3-0 lead at the first intermission.
The first five minutes of the second period saw tensions boil over with a full-ice line brawl after a hard check into the boards behind Patterson. Bo Dolan and Tyler Murovich were ejected for their roles in continuing altercations, and Caleb Herbert was ejected for a secondary altercation. With that, the Gladiators skated the final 35 minutes of the game short four skaters.
The middle frame was actually competitive until Joe Devin tipped in a power play goal at 14:04 on a slick pass from Rowe. A minute-and-a-half later, Marcus Perrier secured the hat trick with a wrist shot from Patterson's right that caught the crossbar and went in.
Perrier tallied a fourth goal in the third period on a loose puck in the left circle, the final goal of the night at 17:15 of the third. The Stingrays defenseman finished the game with four goals, tripling his goal total on the season in one night. In addition, Andrew Rowe had a goal and three assists, and Rob Ricci and Lee Moffie had two assists.
The Gladiators will wrap up their season series with the Stingrays on Sunday afternoon, a 3:05 game at the North Charleston Coliseum. The game will be broadcast on WDUN.com and www.gwinnettgladiators.com/radio, starting at 2:50 p.m.
Gwinnett's next home game will be on March 27th at 7:35 p.m. as they host the Orlando Solar Bears for Friendly Friday.
