South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Duluth, GA - The South Carolina Stingrays (36-18-1-6) set the record for the longest winning streak in ECHL history Saturday evening, picking up their 18th victory in a row with a 6-0 shutout over Gwinnett Gladiators (17-38-3-2) at the North Charleston Coliseum in front of 5,816 on Military Appreciation Night. Defenseman Marcus Perrier scored four goals and an assist and goaltender Jeff Jakaitis registered his league-leading fifth shutout, making 21 saves.
The Stingrays grabbed a trio of goals in the opening period to take a 3-0 lead into the first period. Forward Andrew Rowe kicked off the scoring 2:01 into the frame lifting a shot over the shoulder of Gladiators goaltender Kent Patterson (L, 34 saves on 40 shots) from the left-wing circle. Forward Rob Ricci and defenseman Lee Moffie added assists. Moments later, Perrier gave the Stingrays a two-goal cushion with help from Ricci at 4:51. With time winding down, Perrier added his second goal of the contest and fourth of the season on the power play from Rowe and forward Brandon Wong at 17:00.
In the second period, the Stingrays added two more tallies for a commanding 5-0 advantage in a physical affair. Through 40 minutes of action, the two sides combined for 108 penalty minutes. Forward Joe Devin lit the lamp at 14:04 tipping in a pass from Rowe off the top of the goal crease. Perrier notched the second assist. Just over a minute later, Perrier completed the hat trick, his first as a professional, from Rowe and forward Wayne Simpson at 15:43.
Perrier closed the scoring late in the third period with his fourth of the night from Moffie and forward Andrew Ammon. The Stingrays finished the game 2-for-7 on the power play while the Gladiators went 0-for-5.
Tomorrow, Sunday, March 15, the Stingrays host their first ever Undie Sunday benefiting the Carolina Youth Development Center against the Gladiators at 3:05 at the Coliseum. Bring new, packaged diapers, men's, women's and kid's underwear along with socks and other undergarments to throw on the ice after the Stingrays score their first goal of the game, similar to Teddy Bear Toss.
Sunday is also Mascot Mania and Crews Subaru Family Day featuring $5 kids tickets and $5 kids meals! Meet all of your favorite mascots from around the Lowcountry! Bring your ice skates for the Health First Postgame Skate with the Stingrays.
