WHEELING - Tied at 1-1 after two periods, the Wheeling Nailers scored three unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes to pull away to a 4-1 victory over the Kalamazoo Wings Friday night at the WesBanco Arena.

After a scoreless opening period, Chaz Johnson (12th) put the Nailers ahead with a rebound maker 4:38 into the second.

Wasting no time, Brett Ponich (1st) recorded the equalizer less than two minutes later on a second chance opportunity created by Matt Caria. Ponich was making his season debut for Kalamazoo after starting the season in the American Hockey League with the Springfield Falcons.

Zach Torquato (14th) gave the Nailers the lead for good midway in the period scoring on a wrist shot from atop the left circle.

Following a K-Wings turnover, the Nailers tacked on an insurance marker with less than six minutes remaining with a breakaway tally from Riley Brace (17th).

Killing off a penalty late in regulation, Derek Army (24th) added salt to the K-Wings wound by scoring an empty-net shorthanded goal to close out the scoring.

Kalamazoo will continue a three-game road swing with the second-leg of the trip tomorrow Saturday, March 14th with a 7:05 p.m. encounter at the Santander Arena against the Reading Royals.

The K-Wings will return home to Wings Stadium on Tuesday, March 17th with a 7 p.m. face-off versus the Indy Fuel during the 34th Annual "World Famous" St. Patrick's Day Green Ice Game, presented by O'Reilly Auto Parts.
