March 14, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Estero, FL - Vinny Saponari and Thomas Frazee each scored on Saturday, but the Greenville Road Warriors (31-27-4), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, suffered a 4-2 setback to the Florida Everblades (40-13-6) at Germain Arena. Adam Brace led Florida with a pair of goals.
Greenville's penalty kill also played well, finishing the game 5-for-5, but the Road Warriors came up short in another come-from-behind effort. With the loss, Greenville is now tied with Elmira for fifth place in the East Division standings, one point behind Orlando for the final playoff spot. The Road Warriors have 10 games remaining in the regular season.
The Everblades opened the scoring just 2:11 into the first period when Brace lit the lamp with his team-leading 26th goal of the season. From the right wing, Mitch Wahl threaded the needle with a pass to Brace on the left side for a one-timer that sailed past goaltender Jason Missiaen. Brace extended Florida's lead with his second goal of the contest at 10:10 of the middle frame, from Jesse Graham and Steven Whitney.
Less than two minutes later, Saponari pulled the Road Warriors to within one when he capitalized on a rebound opportunity for his 18th goal of the season. Mike Banwell created the scoring chance with a drive from the perimeter that was knocked down by goaltender Daniel Altshuller, but Saponari continued the play and tucked a forehand shot inside the near post at 12:02.
Florida regained its two-goal advantage at 8:12 of the third period when Gabriel Desjardins beat Missiaen blocker side for his eighth goal of the season.
Another second chance opportunity helped Greenville keep it close at 11:49 of the third period when Frazee scored his first goal with the Road Warriors. From the top of the point, Dallas Jackson hammed a slap shot on target that was stopped by Altshuller, but the rebound popped right to Frazee on the left side of the doorstep for a slam dunk. It was Frazee's 16th goal of the season overall.
Greenville produced several quality scoring chances in the final four minutes of the contest in an attempt to draw even. Unable to capitalize, head coach Dean Stork emptied his net for the extra attacker at 18:10 of the final frame, but misfortune bit the Road Warriors yet again. During the 6-on-5 attack, Anthony Luciani caught the puck at the left point and broke his stick on a shot attempt, which led to a race in transition and an empty net goal from Alex Lavoie at the 18:58 mark.
The Road Warriors finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play, but perfect on the penalty kill. Altshuller (7-3-1) made 28 saves in the victory, while Missiaen (12-14-3) stopped 21 shots in the loss.
Greenville outshot Florida 30-25.
