Grobins Named CHL All-Star
January 5, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Wichita Thunder News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Central Hockey League today named Thunder goaltender Nathan Grobins as a member of the CHL's Northern Conference All-Star Team.
A native of Houston, British Columbia, Grobins joined the Thunder on November 18th from the Memphis RiverKings and has helped put the Thunder back in playoff contention. After going 5-2-0 with Memphis, Grobins has posted an 8-6-2 mark with the Thunder, including two shutouts. On December 19th in Colorado, he narrowly missed another shutout, falling just nine seconds short, in a 3-1 Thunder victory.
On the season, Grobins has picked up 13 victories, just one shy of Bossier-Shreveport's Ken Carroll for the most in the Northern Conference. He also ranks second among all Northern Conference goaltenders with a 2.34 goals against average and a .924 save percentage.
The 31-year-old Grobins was named CHL Goaltender of the Week on November 17th while with Memphis and again while with the Thunder on December 15th. Only Amarillo's Shawn Degagne has won the award more than once this season. Grobins was also named the Feist Publications/Wichita Thunder Player of the Month for December.
A ninth-year pro, Grobins also appeared in the 2000 CHL All-Star Game, en route to a 24-win season with the Fayetteville Force. He followed that up with a 17-win season in 2001 with the CHL's San Antonio Iguanas and on December 20th of this season, recorded his 100th career victory.
The Northern Conference will battle the Southern Conference in the 2004 Dodge CHL All-Star Game on Thursday, January 22nd in Albuquerque, New Mexico. For tickets, call the New Mexico Scorpions at (505) 881-6800.
The Thunder, 4-2-0 in their last six games, host New Mexico tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. at the Kansas Coliseum, before starting a six-game road trip in Memphis on Thursday. In other news, the Thunder activated right wing Ryan McLean from 14-day injured reserve and transferred defenseman Peter Runkel to the 45-day injured reserve with a concussion. The Los Angeles Kings also called-up Thunder goaltender Terry Denike from the ECHL's Reading Royals to the AHL's Manchester Monarchs.
