Scorpions' Richards added to All-Star Roster
January 5, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release
ALBUQUERQUE â The remaining players who will be playing in the 2004 Dodge Central Hockey League All-Star Game were announced today, and for the second straight year the name of New Mexico Scorpions center Chris Richards is on the list. Richards was among 11 players selected today to fill out the Northern Conference roster.
The game will be held in Albuquerque at Tingley Coliseum on Thursday, Jan. 22. The skills competition begins at 6 p.m. with the game to follow at 7:05 p.m. The 2004 Dodge CHL All-Star Banquet will be at Santa Ana Star Casino near Bernalillo on Wednesday, Jan. 21. Cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m. while the banquet begins at 7 p.m. Hockey Hall of Fame member and fifth-leading goal scorer in NHL history Phil Esposito will be the guest speaker.
Richards, 28, scored a goal and added two assists at last year's game in Oklahoma City. This season, he is fifth in the CHL with 31 assists and sixth overall with 45 points after being credited with the game-winning goal in Saturday's 1-0 shootout win over Oklahoma City at Tingley Coliseum. The Cornwall, Ontario native has been the Scorpions' leading scorer each of the past two seasons.
"Chris has really picked up his game after a slow start to the season," said Scorpions Head Coach/Assistant General Manager Bill McDonald, "and that has had a large part to do with our turnaround. I hope he can keep it going in the second half."
The Scorpions begin a four-game road trip covering 3,021 miles tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 6 in Wichita against the Thunder. Faceoff is 6 p.m. MST, and the game can be heard on Sports Radio 610 The Sports Animal beginning at 5:45 p.m. The Scorpions return to Tingley Coliseum on Friday, Jan. 16 when they host Amarillo at Tingley Coliseum for a 7:05 p.m. faceoff.
