RiverKings Help Provide Class for Hockey Enthusiasts
January 5, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss.âThe RiverKings are cooperating with the University of Mississippi-DeSoto Center to bring back last year's highly popular elective course, Hockey 101.
The first course set will be Tuesday, Jan. 13 and Friday, Jan. 16. Tuesday's class will be at 7 p.m. at the Drury Inn on Goodman Road in Horn Lake. The 16th will be at 5:30 p.m. at the DeSoto Civic Center, where the class will watch the âKings take on the Oklahoma City Blazers. There will be two more courses, one on Feb. 3 and 6 and one on March 9 and 12.
The course includes two sessions: the first, the introduction and explanation of basic rules by several âKings players and Head Coach Mark Richards. The second session contains a follow-up class in which âKings staff plan on having a Central Hockey League referee sit on the panel. Immediately afterward, fans get a seat in the stands with a RiverKings player or staff member, of whom the class may ask questions about the game during play.
The $10 courseâwhich includes admission to the game against Oklahoma Cityâis available not only for college students, but also for any fan interested in learning more about the sport.
"Hockey is a fun sport to watch, even if you know nothing about it," RiverKings Governor Kevin Ryan said. "However, really learning the rules, the calls and the plays adds a whole new dimension to the game. It enriches the âenjoyability' of it."
"This course is great for any hockey enthusiast," Community Relations Director Michael Rice said. "Fans of any age or experience level are welcome, whether they are new to the game or have some knowledge and want to learn more. There's nowhere better to learn the basics or the finer points of the game than from the players themselves."
Advance enrollment is encouraged, but registration at the door on the day of Session One is allowed. To enroll call the DeSoto Center at (662) 393-6601 or for more information contact the RiverKings office at (662) 342-1755.
