RiverKings To Spotlight Sexual Assault Resource Center

January 5, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN, Miss.—North Mississippi Sexual Assault Resource Center (NMSARC) will be the featured non-profit at this Friday's Jan. 9 RiverKings game against the New Mexico Scorpions at 7:05 p.m., where the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders will also perform special entertainment.

In December, the Center sponsored a "Gifts from the Heart" program through their Teddy Bears Child Advocacy Center, which provided Christmas gifts to needy children in the area. RiverKings fans adopted 70 of the 223 children, and donated $400 to help fulfill the children's wish lists.

The center is currently selling tickets to Friday's game. The organization will sell teddy bears and purple and white victims rights awareness ribbons during the game. It's all part of the Center's recognition of Victim's Rights Awareness Month in April.

NMSARC will hold an essay contest with the theme of "Victim's Rights, America's Values," in which older students will write essays about how victim's rights are related to the values which United States citizens and citizens in their own community hold dear. The Center will also have a poster and coloring contest for younger students, with age-appropriate themes.

The Center is currently looking for judges to help with the contests and sponsorship.

"Our mission emphasizes helping victims of sexual assault, but we want to help victims of all kinds get the physical and legal aid they need," NMSARC director Debbie Houck said.

Right now, the Center is building several branches within its current services. Harmony House is a place where children and parents can have supervised visits.

"In the case of suspected abuse of a child, parents and children still have the right to see each other," "This allows them to have visitation, in a safe, monitored environment, which protects both the child and the parent."

Another branch of NMSARC is the Teddy Bears Child Advocacy Center, which deals with forensic interviewing for children. The center also will be home to Angels Domestic Outreach Services, which will provide three to six months of living quarters for women or men who have been abused to help them get back on their feet.

"As the victim, you often don't know your rights," Houck said. "I just want to make sure victims in DeSoto County know their rights and know where to go from there. It's a service DeSoto County needs. Generally, you only get that information by paying a heavy price for it. Through our centers, you don't have to do that."
