Gladiators Weekly Update
March 8, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
Back in Action: Despite being off for eight days, the Gladiators are still in third place in the ECHL's Central Division with 71 points, now tied with the Pensacola Ice Pilots. Although they are tied for third place, the Gladiators have played the fewest games in the Division and have a game at hand over the Ice Pilots and first place Louisiana IceGators, three on the second place Mississippi Sea Wolves and the fifth place Columbus Cottonmouth in the Division.
On the Plus Side: Defenseman Jim Jackson was named the C&T Hockey ECHL plus performer for the Month of February along with Columbia's Jesse Schultz as both ended February with a plus/minus rating of +15. Jackson ended the last day of the month with a +4 to move into a tie with Schultz for the award. Ironically, the Gladiators had two of the runners up for the award in Kevin Doell and Paul Flache, as each ended the month with a +12 rating for February.
Rookie of the Month: Forward Kevin Doell was named the CCM ECHL Rookie of the Month for February on Thursday. The rookie helped the Gladiators go 10-3-1 during February, a complete opposite of January where Doell played in just three games due to being recalled to the Chicago Wolves of the AHL while the Gladiators tallied five points and posted a 2-7-1 record.
Player of the Month: Doell was not only named the Rookie of the Month, but the Sher-Wood ECHL Player of the Month of February just a day later. During February, Doell tallied 21 points in 14 games with the Gladiators as the forward posted 11 goals and 10 assists. The rookie out of the University of Denver was also named the Player of the Week for February 2-8 when he posted 8 points in four games and also tied a team high for goals in a game with 4 in a 7-3 win over the Roanoke Express on February 20th. Doell currently leads the Gladiators in scoring with 58 points and is a +18.
Moves: The Gladiators made a host of moves during the break which saw some trades and call ups. The most notable move saw Phil Lewandowski go to the Cincinnati Cyclones for Tyler Deis and Shawn Weiman. David Kaczowka was reassigned to Peoria and Goaltender Mike Buckley was waived. The Gladiators signed goaltender Jeff Dotson out of the University of Wisconsin-Stout while Troy Milam was recalled to Manchester.
St. Patrick's Day Celebration: Join the Gladiators on Friday and Saturday when the Pensacola Ice Pilots and Greensboro Generals make their last regular season visits to the Arena at Gwinnett Center this season. The Gladiators will be wearing special St. Patrick's Day Jerseys in both games and will auction the jerseys following Saturday's contest against Greensboro. Be one of the first 2,000 fans to Friday's match up against Pensacola and get a special poster with the Gladiators in their St. Patrick's Day Jerseys.
