Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gwinnett Gladiators kept pace with division leaders Texas and Florida with a 3-2 win over the Pensacola Ice Pilots on Saturday night on the Your Best Rate Financial Home Ice at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. With the win, Gwinnett posts its 40th win of the season and improves to 40-22-7 on the season.
Pensacola jumped out to a 1-0 lead on the Gladiators just 3:42 into the first period. Rich Meloche was able to capitalize on a Gladiators defensive turnover and beat Gwinnett netminder Dave Caruso for the marker. Rene Gauthier and Dan Riedel picked up the assists on the goal for Pensacola.
Gwinnett tied the game at 1-1 on Mike Vigilante's 25th goal of the season. Picking up a rebound in the slot, Vigilante flipped the puck past Ice Pilots' netminder Adam Geragosian for the goal. Blue Bennefield and Jim Jackson had the assists on the goal at the 6:05 mark of the first period.
Brandon Kaleniecki's 5th goal of the season gave the Gladiators a 2-1 lead on Pensacola 9:47 into the first period. Taking a centering pass from Scott Mifsud, Kaleniecki ripped a one time shot past Geragosian for the tally. Luke Erickson also had a helper on the goal for Gwinnett.
Pensacola tied the game at 2-2 at the 14:47 mark of the first period. Jesse Baraniuk corralled a loose puck along the blue line and ripped a snap shot past Caruso for the marker. Rob Rankin and John Hecimovic had the assists on the goal for the Ice Pilots.
Jon Awe gave the Gladiators a 3-2 lead at the 6:07 mark of the second period ripping a slap shot past Geragosian from the right wing point for the goal. Joel Stepp posted an assist on the goal winning an offensive zone faceoff right to a waiting Awe at the point.
Gwinnett buckled down defensively in the third period, preventing the Ice Pilots from tying the contest. The Ice Pilots pulled Geragosian for an extra attacker late in the third period but could not solve Caruso.
Caruso finished with 28 saves for the Gladiators as he collected his 22nd win of the season. Both teams were unsuccessful on their power play chances in the contest, as both went 0-for-2 on the man advantage.
