Augusta Lynx News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta Lynx scored a goal in each period to down the South Carolina Stingrays 3-2 in a nail biting contest at the James Brown Arena on Saturday night in front of 3,545 fans.
Despite a 22-6 edge in shots on goal in the first period, Augusta could only manage a 1-1 tie on the scoreboard through 20 minutes of play.
Ken Scuderi picked up the rebound from his own blocked shot and beat Davis Parley over the glove for his fifth goal of the year and a 1-0 Lynx lead.
South Carolina came right back just 27 seconds later when Donny Grover picked the top shelf over a stack pad save attempt from Nathan Marsters to even the contest.
In the second period, Augusta recorded the only goal as Aaron Slattengren cashed in a Garett Bembridge feed at 17:50, deking to the backhand and beating Parley on the stick side to make it 2-1 at intermission.
J.B. Bittner took a stretch pass from Weston Tardy and broke in alone on Parley at 10:09, cutting to the glove side and wrapping the puck past the sprawling Stingrays netminder for a 3-1 advantage.
Back came the Stingrays late in the game, as Josh Anderson recorded a shorthanded goal with a wrist shot that Marsters only managed a piece of before it dribbled in over the goal line. Coming with just 1:17 left in regulation, the goal gave South Carolina new life.
After pulling Parley for the extra attacker and moving the play into the Augusta end, the Stingrays would manage few good scoring chances on Marsters, who turned aside a total of 28 shots to pick up the win for Augusta. Parley ended the night with 38 saves in the loss.
The Lynx can now clinch a playoff spot with a win over the Charlotte Checkers on Sunday afternoon, as they would tie the Stingrays total possible points and win by virtue of a tie break, the first being total wins. Augusta takes to the ice at 4:05 pm, with radio coverage beginning one half-hour before puck drop on your Home for Lynx Hockey, NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630.
