Atlanta Gladiators News Release
DULUTH, Ga. - In the first night of their 8th annual Pink In the Rink promotion, the Gladiators (16-28-2-1) received their second consecutive shutout by the South Carolina Stingrays (23-18-1-6) with the 5-0 loss. Adam Rowe and Braden Pimm both had two goals and one assist each for South Carolina, as Adam Morrison recorded the shutout against the Gladiators.
The Gladiators came out onto the pink ice in the first period looking sharp in their black and pink Valentine's Day specialty jerseys. However, there was no love out on the ice between the home team and their division rival South Carolina. The first twenty minutes was all physical, with both teams sharing eight penalties, but no score.
The second period turned completely in the Stingrays' favor, as they opened the floodgates halfway through the period, scoring three straight goals. Andrew Rowe snuck the first goal under Kent Patterson's outreached right arm at 11:47. Rowe's line continued to pound down on the Gladiators' defense, as Braden Pimm received the puck directly in front of the net from Rowe, and promptly slid it past Patterson at 14:05. Just thirty seconds later, Rowe scored his second goal of the period on a feed from Pimm at 14:38. Adversely, the Gladiators notched just 4 shots in the second period, compared to the "ËRays' 12.
Before fans could even take their seats after the second intermission, the Stingrays posted their fourth goal of the game, just 27 seconds into the third period. It was another familiar Stingray face, Pimm, tallying his second of the game. Upon reaching the halfway point of the third, Tim Spencer added insult to injury, scoring the "ËRays' fifth unanswered goal.
South Carolina's fifth goal was the end of the night for Patterson, as Mark Guggenberger took over his goaltending duties at 8:28. However, the home team's efforts were futile, unable to find net past Adam Morrison, on just 17 shots in all.
The pink ice proved to be no indication of the brutality of this matchup, as the violent play continued across all three periods, as both teams exchanged 17 called penalties in all.
The Gladiators will face the Greenville Road Warriors tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 p.m. Join the team for day 2 of PINK IN THE RINK! This will also be the final home game before the Gladiators leave for an eight game road trip.
