The Royal Road Ahead: Reading Royals at Elmira Jackals
February 14, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release
ROYALS PRE-GAME NOTES
- Tonight, the Royals continue the team's current stint on the road with the third in what is a five game road trip at First Arena in Elmira, New York, where Reading will faced the Elmira Jackals for the twelfth time this year.
- The Royals have compiled a record of 6-3-1-1 in the first eleven games of what will be a fifteen game season series between the Reading and Elmira. At First Arena this season, Reading has gone 3-1-1-0 in the first five of what will be seven total games between the two teams here in Elmira.
- The last time the Royals and Jackals faced off here at First Arena, Reading came back from a two goal third period deficit (1-3) to earn a tie in regulation and ultimately get to a shootout, which Reading captured in four rounds. That shootout win for Reading actually served to launch the longest win streak in Royals' team history, which was ended after twelve consecutive victories in last night in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Wheeling Nailers at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia.
- With the team's twelve game win streak, which is the longest in the ECHL since the 2009-10 season, Reading became only the fifteenth team in the twenty-seven year history of the ECHL to win as many as twelve games in a row.
- Prior to launching the team's twelve game win streak in Elmira on January 17, the Royals were dropped by the Jackals, 4-2, at First Arena on January 16. That loss actually snapped an eleven game unbeaten streak (10-0-1-0) for the Royals here in Elmira, dating back to a 4-3 loss for the Royals on February 15, 2013.
- Although the over-time loss for the Royals in Wheeling last night snapped the team record twelve game win streak, Reading stretched the team's current unbeaten streak to thirteen (12-0-1-0) with the OTL and remained in first place of the East Division of the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of the Florida Everblades.
- Despite falling in overtime to the Wheeling Nailers last night, that OTL marked the first time this season that Reading has picked a point of any type whatsoever at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia.
Entering last night's contest against the Nailers, Reading had gone 0-4-0-0 against Wheeling at WesBanco, while compiling a record of 5-0-0-0 against the Nailers at Santander Arena in Reading.
- Friday's OTL also served to snap the Royals' team season-long seven game win streak, which tied the Toledo Walleye for the longest road win streak in the league this year. The current eight game road unbeaten streak (7-0-1-0) is a team season long and is the second longest active road unbeaten streak in the league.
- The 3-2 overtime loss to the Nailers marked the eighth time this year that Reading has played in a game that has gone beyond regulation time, and the team has compiled a record of 5-3 in those games, going 0-2 in games that have been resolved in overtime and 5-1 in games that have gone to the shootout. The other team to beat Reading in overtime this season was the Elmira Jackals who dropped Reading, 3-2, in OT here at First Arena on November 21.
- Technically, last night was a 'blown lead' game for the Royals, i.e. a game in which Reading held a lead but failed to capture the two points. (The Royals led 2-1 for a short span during the second period.) Reading has had seven 'blown lead' games this year-four of which have been at the hands of the Wheeling Nailers.
- Cam Reid (1g-1a) tied last night's game at one with a four-on-three power play goal 10:06 into the first period of play. That was Reid's team-leading nineteenth goal of the season. It was also Reid's fourth power play goal of the year (and his twelfth power play point, 4g-8a). He also assisted on the Royals second goal (by Mike Caruso) to register his twelfth multi-point game of the year. Reid, who has
thirteen points (7g-6a) in his last ten games, generated a personal season high six shots on goal for the fourth time this year in last night's game.
- David Marshall recorded the primary assist on Reid's power play goal on Friday. For Marshall, that was his fifth power play point of the season (3g-2a). Although Marshall had his team season-long four game goal scoring streak snapped last night, he is currently riding a five game point streak (4g-4a=8pts).
Marshall has thirteen points (7g-6a) in his last eleven games.
- Defenseman Jordan Heywood recorded the secondary assist on Reid's power play goal. That was the fifth power play point of the season (1g-4a) for Heywood, who has three points (2g-1a) in his last four games. Last night, Heywood played plus-one (+1) and has played plus-9 (+9) in his last eighteen games.
- Defenseman Michael Caruso scored his second goal of the year last night to give the Royals the team's only lead of the game at 2-1 7:53 into the second period. Caruso's first goal with Reading was scored seventeen games ago on January 3 in a 5-2 win over the Indy Fuel. Caruso has two points (1g-1a) in his last two games.
- Adam Hughesman picked up an assist on Caruso's goal. Hughesman, who leads the Royals with 126 shots on goal, has sixteen points (7g-9a) in his last seventeen games.
- Goaltender Connor Knapp made 32 saves on 35 shots in Friday's overtime loss in Wheeling. Although that OTL snapped Knapp's personal eight game win streak, he has compiled a record of 12-2-1-0 in his last fifteen games for the Royals.
- Reading's power play, which went 1-5 last night, has scored at least one PPG in thirteen of the last nineteen games, going 20 for 81 during that time span (24.7%).
- The Royals penalty killers were touched up for a power play goal (of a five-on-three variety) for only the fourth time in the last fifteen games last night. Reading's PK has killed 52 of the last 56 chances for the opposition with the man advantage, which is a 92.9% kill ratio.
