
Gladiators Beat Ice Pilots 3-2 in Shootout

Gwinnett got goals from Mike Hamilton as well as Matt Anderson while Dan Turple made 37 saves and stopped all three shooters in the shootout to help the Gladiators to a 3-2 shootout win over the Pensacola Ice Pilots on Friday night at the Pensacola Civic Center. The Gladiators remain in second place in the ECHL's South Division with the win while improving to 21-7-3 on the season in the victory.
Anderson got the Gladiators on the board first with his third goal of the season on the power play just 2:10 into the first period. Anderson redirected a slapshot from the point past Pensacola netminder Cam Ellsworth for the man advantage goal. Jamie Milam and Bryson Busniuk notched the assists on the power play goal for Gwinnett.
Gwinnett took a 2-0 lead on the Ice Pilots in the second period. Hamilton ripped a slap shot past Ellsworth from the right wing circle for the power play maker with less than four minutes left in the second period. Stuart MacRae notched an assist on the power play goal for Gwinnett moving the puck up the ice to set up Hamilton on the marker at 16:03 of the period.
Pensacola got on the board in the third period just 3:52 into the stanza. Erik Fabian was able to corrall a bouncing puck in the left wing circle and jam the puck past Gladiators netminder Dan Turple for the marker. The goal by Fabian came unassisted for the Ice Pilots.
Preston Briggs tied the game at three at 7:09 of the third period beating Turple from a pile up in front of the Gladiators net for the marker. Kevin Harris and Mike Sgroi posted the assists on the goal for Pensacola sending the game to overtime.
Gwinnett went to its third consecutive shootout after the teams skated to a scoreless overtime period. The Gladiators were able to put the contest away in the shootout as all of Gwinnett's first three shooters, Tomas Pospisil, Lou Dickenson and Jeff Campbell, were able to beat Ellsworth while Turple turned aside all Pensacola shooters to seal with win. Turple finished with 37 saves in the win for Gwinnett while the Gladiators went 2-for-4 on the power play in the win.
The Gladiators continue their fifth anniversary season on Saturday, January 5th as they host the Mississippi Sea Wolves at the Arena at Gwinnett Center at 7:35 p.m. Catch all the play-by-play action in Saturday's game online via AccessNorthGa.com on Access raiod streamming channel 3.
Celebrating its 20th Anniversary as the Premier 'AA' Hockey League in 2007-08, the ECHL began in 1988-89 with five teams in three states and has grown to be a coast-to-coast league that has 25 teams in 17 states and British Columbia in 2007-08. The 25 teams includes the Mississippi (Biloxi) Sea Wolves, who return after missing two seasons in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and the expansion Elmira (N.Y.) Jackals. The ECHL will play 900 games beginning Oct. 18 and concluding Apr. 5.
