Former Gladiator Doell makes NHL debut

Former Gwinnett Gladiator Kevin Doell became the fifth player to advance to the National Hockey League after playing for the Gladiators after appearing in the Atlanta Thrashers 4-3 loss against the Carolina Hurricanes tonight at Phillips Arena.

In his first NHL game, Doell was held scoreless with the Thrashers. He appeared in 9:23 of ice time during the game and picked up a hooking penalty during the third period.

Doell appeared in 33 games with the Wolves this season where he collected 7 goals and 7 assists for 14 points while amassing 41 penalty minutes. Doell notched a natural hat-trick, including a penalty shot goal, while with Chicago in a 10-2 win over Iowa on December 15th.

The Saskatoon, Sask, native was named the ECHL Rookie of the Year while with Gwinnett during the 2003-04 season while leading the Gladiators in scoring with 74 points. Doell led Gwinnett in goals with 33 and added 41 assists while helping Gwinnett to the ECHL Western Conference Finals. In addition, Doell posted 15 points in 11 games with Gwinnett during the 2004-05 season.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound forward appeared in 78 games with Chicago during the 2005-06 season collecting 51 points with the Wolves. Doell notched 33 points in 80 games last season with the Wolves.

Doell joins Colin Stuart, who was called up to Atlanta on December 30th, as well as Adam Munro (Chicago), Adam Berkhoel (Atlanta) and Michael Garnett (Atlanta) who all played for the Gladiators before appearing in the National Hockey League.

The Gladiators continue their fifth anniversary season on Sunday, December 30th as they travel to North Charleston, South Carolina to take on the South Carolina Stingrays at 4:05 p.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum. Celebrating its 20th Anniversary as the Premier 'AA' Hockey League in 2007-08, the ECHL began in 1988-89 with five teams in three states and has grown to be a coast-to-coast league that has 25 teams in 17 states and British Columbia in 2007-08. The 25 teams includes the Mississippi (Biloxi) Sea Wolves, who return after missing two seasons in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and the expansion Elmira (N.Y.) Jackals. The ECHL will play 900 games beginning Oct. 18 and concluding Apr. 5.
