Checkers Present Second Annual Race Night
January 4, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - In an effort to raise funds for two local non-profit organizations, the Charlotte Checkers will host their second annual Race Night on Friday, Jan. 18 when they face the Augusta Lynx at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena starting at 7:30 pm.
The night has been crafted to directly benefit the Victory Junction Gang Camp and the Hendrick Marrow Program. In addition to a race theme the game will feature several racing show cars that will be on display throughout the evening including the new # 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet and the Snap-on Tools dragster. Several drivers will also be on hand to support the fundraising efforts including Michael Waltrip, David Gilliland, Doug Herbert, and many more.
Before the game, a Victory Junction Gang (VJG) camper will sing the national anthem to kick off the festivities. During an intermission, pediatric marrow transplant recipients and VJG campers will be partnered with professional drivers to race remote controlled cars on the ice. As a means to raise further funds, sponsorships are being made available for each remote controlled race car.
The Checkers will raise additional funds by holding a raffle that will see one lucky fan win an AutoTrader.com golf car. The golf car paint scheme was designed by Hendrick Motorsports. Tickets for the raffle can be purchased for just $10 at each Checkers home game starting Friday, Nov. 23 until Jan 18.
The evening will also feature a marrow drive sponsored by the Hendrick Marrow Program. Checkers fans wanting to be added to the National Marrow Donor Program Registry will be able to do so at any point during the game.
"We are very honored that the Charlotte Checkers have once again chosen Victory Junction as a recipient for their event in January," said chairman and community volunteer, Pattie Petty. "Their continued support of camp has been tremendous. Kyle and I are very grateful for everything they have done."
Rick Hendrick, Chairman and CEO of Hendrick Motorsports said, "The Checkers are a wonderful part of the Charlotte sports community and I am honored that they have chosen to support the Hendrick Marrow Program with proceeds from Race Night."
Michael Waltrip, team owner and driver of Michael Waltrip Racing said, "Each of the organizations benefiting from Race Night are dear to my heart. Kyle and Pattie's passion for the Victory Junction Gang Camp is infectious and something I look forward to supporting whenever possible. As a fellow NASCAR team-owner, Rick Hendrick has been a friend, a confidant and someone I respect immensely. The ability to support his philanthropic endeavors is only a small token of my appreciation and I'm looking forward to the evening's events."
"All of us at AutoTrader.com are excited to be part of this event to benefit these two outstanding organizations," said Chip Perry, President and CEO of AutoTrader.com. "We are especially pleased to join with the Charlotte Checkers on this effort because we are committed to helping Victory Junction Gang Camp and the Hendrick Marrow Program advance their mission in the Charlotte community."
"I'm honored to once again be part of such a great event," said Herbert. "The Charlotte Checkers Race Night was a blast last year, and my kids and I had a great time. We are really looking forward to a great night of hockey and having the chance to help out the wonderful organizations of the Victory Junction Gang and Hendrick Marrow Program."
